What Fifty Thousand Dollars Bought

Chapter 07 - What Fifty Thousand Dollars Bought
The truth began arriving piece by piece.
Twenty-three years earlier, Charles had been deeply in debt.
He had secretly borrowed against company assets and feared Emma would discover the missing money after joining the family business.
So Charles needed her gone.
He created photographs.
Forged documents.
Fed Richard exactly the story his pride was ready to believe.
But there was something worse.
Emma had discovered part of the scheme.
Charles offered her fifty thousand dollars to remain silent.
She refused.
Instead, she disappeared from the Hale family before Charles could frame Ethan for financial crimes.
"She protected me," Ethan whispered.
Richard nodded.
"And I punished her for it."
Richard asked why Emma never exposed Charles publicly.
Ethan finally understood.
"Because she knew you'd choose him."
Richard looked shattered.
For twenty-three years, Emma had believed her own father would trust his brother over his daughter.
And based on what Richard had done, she had been right.
The financial investigator found another clue.
Someone had continued monitoring Emma for years.
Small payments to private investigators appeared throughout Charles's accounts.
The last payment had been made nine months earlier.
One month before Emma died.
Ethan felt cold.
"He knew she was sick."
Richard looked at him.
"How sick?"
"Cancer."
Ethan swallowed.
"She fought for two years."
Richard turned away.
His daughter had been dying while Charles knew exactly where she was.
And Charles had said nothing.
That night, Richard sat alone in Emma's childhood bedroom.
For the first time, he allowed himself to cry.
But downstairs, Ethan received another call.
The investigator had found the missing final page of Emma's letter.

It had been photographed years earlier.
And on that page was a warning that could destroy the entire Hale & Whitmore empire.
