Learning to Live Again

Chapter 19 - Learning to Live Again

Two years passed.

Ethan's workshop became one of the most respected custom woodworking companies in the state.

Richard never returned to corporate life.

He became a full-time grandfather instead.

According to Lily, his pancakes remained "acceptable."

On the anniversary of Emma's death, Ethan visited her grave alone.

He sat in the grass.

"I kept my promise."

The wind moved gently through the trees.

"Lily found him."

Ethan smiled.

"Or maybe he found her."

He told Emma about school.

The workshop.

Richard.

Everything.

Then he admitted something harder.

"I think I'm okay."

For years, saying those words had felt like betrayal.

As though healing meant loving Emma less.

Now Ethan finally understood.

Grief was not a debt that required permanent suffering.

Emma had fought to give him and Lily a future.

Living that future was not abandoning her.

It was honoring her.

When Ethan returned home, he found Richard and Lily attempting to assemble a new bookshelf.

They had somehow managed to install every shelf backward.

Ethan stared at them.

"You two realize I literally build furniture for a living?"

Richard handed him the screwdriver.

"We wanted to surprise you."

"You succeeded."

Lily laughed.

For a moment, Ethan simply stood in the doorway.

Once, he had believed his family ended when Emma died.

Now he understood that families could break.

They could change.

Sometimes, against every expectation, they could even grow again.

The next morning, Lily announced she had one final plan.

She wanted to bring Grandpa Richard somewhere special.
