The Empty Chair

Chapter 16 - The Empty Chair

Richard attended the next board meeting.

His chair waited at the head of the table.

For forty-six years, that chair had defined him.

He sat down.

Looked around.

Then stood again.

"I resign."

The directors erupted.

Richard raised his hand.

"I spent my entire life building something I believed would outlive me."

He paused.

"It almost cost me everyone who mattered."

He appointed a longtime employee, Maria Bennett, as interim CEO.

Then Richard did something no Hale had ever done.

He created an independent employee trust using a substantial portion of his shares.

Part of the recovered money Charles had stolen would be returned to workers and retirees.

The company changed.

So did Richard.

He sold the mansion.

Not because he needed money.

Because it contained too many rooms where nobody laughed.

He bought a smaller house fifteen minutes from Ethan and Lily.

His first purchase was a pancake griddle.

Ethan mocked him relentlessly.

Richard deserved it.

Meanwhile, Cole Custom Woodworking expanded.

Ethan hired six employees.

Then twelve.

He created an apprenticeship program for fathers struggling to rebuild their lives.

On the wall of his office, he placed one photograph of Emma.

Not sick.

Not dying.

Laughing.

Exactly as he wanted Lily to remember her.

Life began settling into something that almost felt peaceful.

Until Lily's teacher called.

There had been an incident at school.

Another student had told Lily that her mother had abandoned her grandfather because she was ashamed of her family.

Lily had not cried at school.

She waited until Ethan arrived.

Then she asked:

"Daddy, was Mommy a bad person?"
