The Meeting Ethan Never Knew About

Chapter 13 - The Meeting Ethan Never Knew About

Ethan stared at the photograph.

Emma had told him she had not seen Charles in twenty-three years.

The timestamp proved otherwise.

Richard obtained security footage from the restaurant.

Emma and Charles had met privately.

For almost an hour.

Ethan felt betrayed.

Why had she hidden it?

Then the investigator discovered the answer.

Emma had contacted Charles after learning she was dying.

She offered him one final chance.

Confess.

Return the stolen money.

Tell Richard the truth.

Charles refused.

But Emma had secretly recorded everything.

The recording became the strongest evidence against him.

At the end of it, Charles asked one question.

"Why come back now?"

Emma answered quietly.

"Because my daughter deserves a family that isn't built on lies."

Ethan listened to the sentence repeatedly.

Emma had not been trying to reconnect with money.

She had been preparing a path for Lily.

A path back to Richard.

That night, Ethan finally visited Emma's grave with Richard.

The two men stood in silence.

Richard placed no diamonds beside the headstone.

Only a photograph.

It showed seven-year-old Lily covered in pancake flour, laughing beside her grandfather.

Richard touched the stone.

"I'm sorry I was late."

Ethan looked away.

Then Richard whispered:

"But I found her."

For the first time, Ethan placed a hand on Richard's shoulder.

Neither man spoke.

They did not need to.

But behind them, a black sedan had stopped near the cemetery entrance.

Inside sat Charles Whitmore.

Released pending trial.

Watching them.

And Charles had decided that if he was going to lose everything, Richard would lose something too.
