A Name That Changed Everything

Chapter 02 - A Name That Changed Everything

Vanessa's smile disappeared when Ethan said the name.

"Richard Hale."

A nearby employee glanced up.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Mr. Hale does not meet people who walk in off the street."

"I'm not asking for an appointment."

"Then what exactly are you asking for?"

Ethan looked at Lily.

"I'm asking you to tell him Emma Cole's husband is here."

For several seconds, Vanessa said nothing.

Then she laughed softly.

"Mr. Hale doesn't have a daughter named Emma Cole."

Ethan had expected that answer.

Because Emma had warned him.

Her father had erased her from the family long before Lily was born.

Emma Hale had grown up surrounded by wealth, private schools and summer homes. Richard Hale had imagined a future for his only daughter that included a prestigious marriage and a place beside him in the family business.

Instead, Emma had fallen in love with Ethan.

A carpenter's son.

A man who worked with his hands.

Richard had called the relationship a mistake.

When Emma refused to end it, Richard gave her a choice.

Her family.

Or Ethan.

She chose Ethan.

Ethan still remembered the night she walked away from the Hale mansion carrying one suitcase.

She never went back.

Until now, Ethan had honored her wish to keep Lily away from that world.

But dying had changed Emma's mind.

"Please," Ethan said. "Just make the call."

Vanessa's patience vanished.

"I've heard enough."

She motioned toward security.

Lily grabbed Ethan's hand.

"Daddy?"

Ethan looked down at her frightened face.

"It's okay."

The guard began walking toward them.

Then Lily suddenly pointed toward a framed photograph on the wall.

"Daddy."

Ethan froze.

The photograph showed Richard Hale twenty-five years earlier standing beside a young blonde woman at the opening of the store's flagship location.

Lily stared at the woman.

"She looks like Mommy."

Every employee within earshot turned toward the photograph.

Vanessa looked from Lily to the woman in the picture.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Same eyes.

Same nose.

Even the same small dimple in the left cheek.

The security guard stopped walking.

And somewhere behind the private office doors, a man had just heard the name Emma Hale for the first time in twenty-three years.
