The Man Who Didn't Ask for the Keys

Chapter 19 - The Man Who Didn't Ask for the Keys
A year after the canceled wedding, construction began on Eleanor House.
Laura worked with a restoration architect named Nathan Cole—not related to Richard—who had spent most of his career preserving historic coastal buildings.
Nathan was fifty, divorced, patient, and completely unimpressed by Laura's money.
Their first argument was about a row of live oak trees.
"We can save all six," Laura insisted.
"We can save five safely," Nathan replied.
"Then redesign the road."
"That will cost more."
"I know."
He looked at her for a moment.
"All right. We'll redesign the road."
There was no charm offensive. No quick romance. No promises over champagne.
They worked together for eight months before he asked her to dinner.
Laura almost said no.
Then she realized fear was making the decision for her.
So she said yes.
Their relationship developed slowly.
Nathan never asked to see her accounts. He never suggested merging businesses. He never treated her caution as a personal insult.
When Laura told him the entire story of the spa, the forged documents, and the waterfront land, he listened without trying to rescue her.
"You don't have to prove to me that you're over it," he said.
That sentence loosened something in her chest.

For the first time since Evan, Laura understood that love could feel steady instead of urgent.
It could arrive without asking for the keys.
