Marisol Tells the Whole Truth

Chapter 12 - Marisol Tells the Whole Truth
Marisol returned to Charleston with an attorney of her own.
She asked to meet Laura in Dana's office.
Laura almost refused.
Then Dana said, "You don't have to forgive her to hear what she knows."
So Laura listened.
Marisol admitted the affair began in January after a late client dinner. Evan had told her the engagement was failing.
"I knew better," Marisol said. "I just didn't want to know better."
There was no excuse, and she did not offer one.
Then she explained why the affair continued.
Evan had slowly pulled her into his development plan. He asked Marisol, who owned a small branding agency, to create presentations for a resort concept.
She believed Laura approved it.
When Marisol began asking questions, Evan showed her doctored emails.
Later, when she threatened to tell Laura everything, he reminded her that her signature appeared on vendor invoices.
"He said if he went down, I'd go down first."
Laura's expression did not soften.
"And you still met him at the spa."
Marisol nodded, ashamed.
"Because he said he had proof that would clear me. I thought he was going to give it to me there. Instead, he told me to stop panicking and trust him. Then you walked in."
Laura leaned back.
That explained the fear in Marisol's face.
It did not erase the betrayal.
But it changed the shape of it.
Marisol slid an envelope across the table.
Inside was a handwritten note from Evan.
If Laura signs after the wedding, we're done worrying.
Below it was a list of three documents.
One was the operating agreement amendment.
One was a medical power of attorney.
The third was a transfer authorization for the waterfront property.
Laura stared at the paper.
"He wanted all three signed after the wedding?"
Marisol nodded.
"He said people sign anything during a honeymoon if you put champagne beside it."
Laura's hands curled into fists.
That was the moment heartbreak finally turned into something else.
