The Lie Inside Her Company

Chapter 11 - The Lie Inside Her Company

Back home in Charleston, the investigation widened.

Laura's employees were stunned when forensic accountants began reviewing vendor records.

Most had no idea Evan had been involved in company finances.

One did.

Nolan Pierce, the operations manager, had approved several invoices connected to Mercer Strategic Development.

When Laura called him into her office, he looked terrified.

"Evan said you authorized everything," Nolan explained. "He forwarded emails from your account."

"They weren't from my account."

Nolan's face fell.

He showed her printouts.

The email address used Laura's name with one letter changed.

Laura felt anger rise, but she kept her voice level.

"Why didn't you call me?"

"Because he was your fiancé. And because he knew details only someone close to you should know."

That answer hurt because it was reasonable.

Evan had weaponized intimacy.

He knew when Laura traveled. He knew when Emma visited. He knew which financial decisions Laura worried about and which employees she trusted.

He had not broken into the company from outside.

Laura had opened the door for him.

Still, Nolan had one useful piece of information.

Three months earlier, Evan had asked him to prepare internal projections for a waterfront hospitality project.

"I assumed it was yours," Nolan said.

The working title was Eleanor Harbor.

Laura went completely still.

Eleanor was her mother's name.

The planned resort would sit on the hidden waterfront land.

Evan had intended not only to sell or control the property—he had branded the project using Laura's mother's legacy.

That night, Laura sat alone in the old study where Eleanor used to balance accounts by hand.

She found herself crying for the first time since the spa.

Not for Evan.

For the violation of something older.

He had taken her mother's name and tried to turn it into a key.

Laura wiped her face and opened a fresh notebook.
