What Evan Really Wanted

Chapter 16 - What Evan Really Wanted

The investigation revealed that Evan had debt Laura never knew about.

Years before they met, he had lost money in two failed real estate projects. He owed private lenders, legal fees, and former partners.

By the time he proposed to Laura, his financial life was collapsing.

The engagement had given him access—not automatically to Laura's money, but to her trust, routines, documents, and reputation.

The waterfront property offered a way out.

Laura sat with Dana as the full picture emerged.

"So was any of it real?" Laura asked.

Dana hesitated.

"I can't answer that."

Laura already knew.

People wanted simple villains. It was easier to believe Evan had never cared about her at all.

But Laura remembered quiet Sunday breakfasts, hospital visits when Emma had surgery, nights Evan had held her while she grieved her mother.

Some of those moments might have been genuine.

That made the betrayal harder, not easier.

A person could care about you and still choose greed.

A person could love parts of you while deciding they were entitled to what you owned.

Laura stopped asking whether the entire relationship had been fake.

The more important truth was that, when love and opportunity collided, Evan chose opportunity.

That was enough.

His attorney later informed Dana that Evan was willing to cooperate with investigators in exchange for a structured civil settlement.

Laura did not attend those negotiations.

For once, she allowed professionals to handle the mess.

She had spent too much of her life cleaning up after other people's choices.
