Marisol Comes Back With Proof

Chapter 17 - Marisol Comes Back With Proof

Marisol disappeared from Laura's life for nearly two months.

She resigned from the wedding-related contracts, closed her branding agency temporarily, and cooperated with investigators.

Then one morning, she sent Laura a single email.

I found something that belongs to you. No reply needed. Dana has it.

The attachment was an old photograph.

Eleanor Bennett stood on the waterfront property thirty years earlier, younger, windblown, smiling beside a hand-painted sign that read: SOMEDAY, SOMETHING GOOD HERE.

Laura stared at the picture for a long time.

Dana later explained that Marisol had found the photo in a presentation archive Evan had copied from Laura's family storage.

There were also notes written by Eleanor about preserving public shoreline access and creating a small community retreat rather than selling the land to luxury developers.

Laura's breath caught.

For months, everyone had treated the property as an asset worth eighteen million dollars.

Her mother had seen it as something else.

A promise.

Laura called Marisol for the first time since the spa.

"Thank you for finding this."

Marisol was quiet.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

"Good," Laura said gently. "Because I don't know what forgiveness looks like yet."

"I understand."

Laura looked at the old photograph.

"But I don't want what you did to be the only thing you ever are."

Marisol began crying on the other end.

Laura did not say everything was fine.

It wasn't.

But healing, she was beginning to learn, did not require pretending damage never happened.

It required deciding what could be rebuilt—and what should remain broken.
