The Wedding Cancellation Everyone Saw

Chapter 10 - The Wedding Cancellation Everyone Saw

Laura canceled the wedding herself.

Not through gossip. Not through a vague family statement.

She sent one message to every guest.

The wedding between Laura Bennett and Evan Mercer will not take place. Thank you for respecting the privacy of our families. I will not be discussing personal details at this time.

She refused to humiliate Marisol publicly. She refused to perform pain for strangers.

But Evan did not show the same restraint.

Within hours, an anonymous source told a local entertainment page that Laura had suffered "a stress-related breakdown" and canceled the ceremony suddenly.

Another post claimed she was "under pressure from business losses."

Emma threw her phone onto the couch.

"He's trying to make you look unstable."

Laura stared at the screen.

The language sounded familiar.

Unavailable. Medically incapacitated.

The same language in the draft operating agreement.

"This isn't revenge," Laura said. "It's groundwork."

Dana agreed.

If Evan could create the impression that Laura was mentally or emotionally unfit, he might later argue that his actions were taken to protect business assets.

So Laura did something she hated.

She stepped into public view.

She attended the investor dinner she had planned to host before the wedding.

Wearing a simple navy dress and no engagement ring, she walked into the ballroom alone.

Conversations stopped.

Evan stood near the bar with Richard Cole.

His expression hardened when he saw her.

Laura greeted every investor by name.

She discussed projects, timelines, and budgets with calm precision.

Then, just before dessert, she stood and made one announcement.

"For clarity, Mr. Mercer no longer represents me or any Bennett company in any capacity. Any document stating otherwise should be sent directly to counsel."

Richard Cole nearly dropped his glass.

Evan did not move.

Laura met his eyes across the room.

No screaming.

No revenge speech.

Just a boundary, spoken where the people he had tried to impress could hear it.

For the first time, she saw real fear in his face.
