The Siege at the Lake

Chapter 08 - The Siege at the Lake
At 3:00 AM, a heavy fog rolled over the lake, swallowing the estate in shadows.
Inside the house, Adrian sat at Clara and Mia’s bedside, watching their quiet breathing. Suddenly, the soft green light on the bedroom's security panel flickered red. The silent alarm buzzed in Adrian’s pocket.
Mark’s voice came sharply through Adrian’s earpiece: "Boss, we have perimeter breaches at the north gate and the boat dock. Armed men. They cut the main power lines."
Adrian stood up instantly, pulling a high-caliber handgun from his shoulder holster. "Keep my daughters locked in the safe room downstairs, Mark. Don't let anyone near them."
Downstairs, glass shattered in the main conservatory. Three masked men armed with silenced pistols stepped through the broken frames, moving swiftly toward the foyer.
Before they could reach the stairs, Adrian stepped out from the shadows of the upper balcony, firing three precise shots. The leading intruder collapsed instantly, while the other two scrambled behind the marble pillars for cover.
"Adrian! Give up!" a voice shouted from the front entrance.
Julian Vance stepped into the foyer, flanked by Victoria, who wore a rain-soaked coat, her eyes wild with unhinged desperation.

"You're outmatched, Adrian!" Julian shouted, raising his weapon toward the balcony. "Hand over the custody papers and sign the asset transfer, or we burn this entire estate to the ground with your brats inside!"
"You should have stayed in exile, Julian," Adrian’s voice echoed cold and steady through the darkened hall. "And Victoria... you just guaranteed you will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security cell."
