The Daughter They Erased

Chapter 05 - The Daughter They Erased

Ethan stood between his mother and the wall.

“Where is Lily?”

Evelyn looked at Rosa, who lowered her eyes but did not apologize.

“That name should never have been shown to you,” Evelyn said.

“It was written on a nursery wall, not buried in a grave.”

“Vanessa was nineteen. She was frightened and unprepared.”

“Did she want to keep her baby?”

Evelyn’s silence answered.

My anger toward Vanessa did not disappear. She had threatened my marriage, my home, and my unborn daughter.

But now I saw the shape of the wound beneath her cruelty.

Evelyn walked to the crib and replaced the sheet over it.

“Your father was negotiating the company’s first major expansion. Reporters were already asking why Vanessa had withdrawn from college. We protected her.”

“You protected the business,” Ethan said.

“We protected everyone.”

“By taking her child?”

“By placing the child with a stable family.”

Ethan’s voice cracked. “And then you gave me the company.”

Evelyn flinched.

There it was.

The part no one had said aloud.

While Vanessa recovered in a hidden nursery, Ethan had been publicly prepared as Arthur Bennett’s successor. The daughter who sacrificed everything became the reliable assistant. The son who knew nothing became the heir.

Evelyn turned to me.

“You have no right to judge decisions made before you entered this family.”

“I’m not judging the adoption,” I said. “I’m judging the silence.”

“The silence allowed Vanessa to survive.”

“No. The silence taught her that love could be removed whenever it became inconvenient.”

Evelyn’s eyes hardened.

“You think motherhood has made you wise?”

“No. It has made me understand why Vanessa hates me.”

The front door opened downstairs.

A minute later, Vanessa appeared in the nursery.

She had changed from her silver gown into a cream suit. She stopped when she saw the wall.

The color drained from her face.

“You had no right.”

Ethan stepped toward her. “You had a daughter.”

“Do not speak about her.”

“Is Lily alive?”

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

Something passed between them—an old command and an old fear.

Then Vanessa turned to me.

“You did this.”

“I received a message.”

“From whom?”

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa stared at the phone in my hand as if it had become a weapon.

“My daughter has nothing to do with you.”

“Then why did someone want us to find her name?”

Vanessa’s composure cracked.

“Because someone is trying to destroy what little I have left.”

Ethan shook his head. “You have the company. You took it from me.”

“I worked for it while you inherited it.”

“You could have told me.”

“And what would you have done? Given me a sympathetic hug before returning to the office Father built for you?”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“My daughter lost the Bennett name. I lost my place in this family. Now Claire’s baby arrives, and suddenly there are trusts, photographs, nurseries and speeches about legacy.”

She looked at my stomach.

“I will not watch another child receive everything Lily was denied.”

Her phone rang.

Vanessa checked the screen, and her expression changed.

Before she could silence it, I saw the caller’s name.

Lily Hart.
