The Truth Vanessa Chose

Chapter 17 - The Truth Vanessa Chose

The investigation lasted six weeks.

Vanessa lost her executive position permanently. She was required to repay company funds used for the smear campaign, and prosecutors reviewed her role in the false board submissions.

Evelyn resigned from every Bennett trust and foundation.

The board offered Ethan his position back.

He declined.

Instead, he proposed a restructuring that gave employees seats on the board and prevented any Bennett family member from holding unilateral voting authority.

Some directors called it radical.

The employees called it overdue.

Lily chose not to pursue immediate control under Arthur’s trust. Through Maya, she negotiated an agreement protecting the hotels from sale while the trust’s legality was reviewed.

“I don’t want my first adult decision to be becoming responsible for twelve hotels,” she told me.

“That sounds sensible.”

“I may want a scholarship fund.”

“For adopted children?”

“For young parents pressured into decisions because they have no money.”

Vanessa funded the first year by selling her city apartment and most of her jewelry.

She did not announce the donation.

Lily discovered it through Maya.

Their relationship moved slowly.

One coffee became two. A therapy session became a walk in the park. Lily began calling Vanessa by her first name rather than referring to her as “my birth mother.”

Vanessa accepted each boundary without complaint.

One afternoon, she visited our rental house.

My belly had grown so large that getting out of a chair required planning. Vanessa remained near the doorway until I invited her inside.

“I came to apologize,” she said.

“You already apologized.”

“I admitted what I did. That isn’t the same.”

She sat across from me.

“I looked at your baby and saw everything taken from me. I told myself I was protecting Lily, but I was punishing you for being allowed to keep your child.”

I listened.

“I wanted Ethan to feel what I felt,” she continued. “Powerless. Replaced. I did not care that hurting him meant hurting you.”

“What changed?”

“Lily said she would not build a relationship with someone who needed enemies.”

Vanessa folded her hands.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

A faint, sad smile crossed her face.

“But I believe people can become more than the worst thing they’ve done,” I said. “That doesn’t mean the consequences disappear.”

“I understand.”

“You will not be alone with my daughter until Ethan and I decide we trust you.”

“I understand that too.”

Vanessa rose.

Before leaving, she placed the blue box of letters on the table.

“Lily thinks these should be kept somewhere safe.”

May you like

“Why here?”

“She said this is the only house in the family where nobody uses locked doors.”
