The Recording Heard by Everyone

Chapter 02 - The Recording Heard by Everyone
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then the quartet stopped playing.
Guests had begun gathering near the open ballroom doors. From where they stood, they could see Ethan holding my phone, Vanessa on the staircase, and Evelyn watching all three of us with the cold disappointment of someone whose plan had been executed badly.
Not someone who had discovered a betrayal.
Someone whose betrayal had been discovered.
Ethan lowered the phone.
“Mom, what did you mean?”
Evelyn glanced toward the guests. “This is not an appropriate place.”
“You chose the place,” I said.
Her eyes settled on me.
They had never been warm, but until that night, they had always been polite. Evelyn believed cruelty became acceptable when spoken softly.
She walked into the staircase hall and closed the ballroom doors, leaving the guests whispering on the other side.
“The company is under pressure,” she said. “A lender raised questions about Ethan’s judgment. Vanessa created a temporary arrangement to reassure the board.”
“Created a crisis,” Ethan corrected. “That’s what she said.”
Vanessa’s mouth tightened. “You were ignoring everything. The hotel renovation was late, the Chicago property was over budget, and you spent half your meetings answering Claire’s calls.”
“I called him twice from the hospital.”
“You weren’t dying.”
Ethan moved toward her so quickly that Vanessa’s back touched the railing.
“Do not speak to my wife like that.”
For a moment, I believed he finally understood.
Then he turned to Evelyn.
“Can the proxy be canceled?”
His mother hesitated.
That hesitation frightened me more than Vanessa’s confession.
Ethan noticed it too.
“What did I sign?”
Evelyn smoothed the front of her gown. “A transfer of voting authority triggered by a finding of impaired leadership.”
“I’m not impaired.”
“Vanessa has already submitted documentation suggesting otherwise.”
Ethan stared at his sister. “What documentation?”
Vanessa recovered some of her confidence.
“Missed meetings. Financial delays. Your public argument with a lender. Records showing that company money was used for private medical travel.”
“The company plane took Claire to a specialist because our commercial flight was canceled.”
“The board will decide whether that was responsible.”
My daughter kicked again, harder this time.
I shifted on the stair, and Ethan immediately crouched beside me.
“Are you in pain?”
“Not exactly. I need to leave.”
Vanessa laughed once, bitterly.
“There it is. She needs something, and you abandon everything.”
Ethan stood.
“No. I am leaving because my pregnant wife is sitting on a staircase while my sister explains how she stole my company.”
He helped me rise carefully.
Before we reached the front door, Evelyn called his name.
“When the board votes tomorrow, you will have one opportunity to save your position.”
Ethan stopped.
“What do they want?”
Evelyn looked at me.
“They want proof that Claire no longer influences your decisions.”
I understood before Ethan did.
May you like
“They want him to leave me.”
Evelyn did not deny it.
