The Heir Nobody Counted

Chapter 10 - The Heir Nobody Counted

Arthur Bennett’s trust had been written twenty-two years earlier, before Lily was born.

According to Vanessa, the controlling shares of Bennett House Hotels were meant to pass to his first biological grandchild on that child’s twenty-fifth birthday.

When Vanessa became pregnant, Arthur panicked.

If the child carried the Bennett name and remained within the family, she would eventually control the company.

The adoption solved two problems.

It removed the scandal.

And it removed the heir.

“Your father gave Ethan the company afterward,” I said.

“He gave Ethan temporary control,” Vanessa replied. “Mother let everyone believe it was permanent.”

“Does Lily know?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because if the trust is enforced, she becomes a target.”

“You were preparing to introduce her at a press conference.”

“I was going to announce her as my daughter, not as the beneficiary.”

“That distinction won’t protect her.”

Vanessa was silent.

Her choices had become so tangled that she could no longer separate protecting Lily from controlling her.

“What does my baby have to do with this?” I asked.

“If Lily’s adoption is declared legally separate from the Bennett line under the trust’s language, your daughter becomes the first recognized grandchild.”

“So you tried to remove Ethan before our baby was born.”

“I tried to secure the company before Mother could choose another child over mine.”

The cruelty of it sat beside the grief.

Neither canceled the other.

“Where is the original trust?”

“Mother has it.”

“Then why hasn’t she destroyed it?”

“Because the trust controls properties she cannot sell without it. She needs the document to keep the mansion and the hotels together.”

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“She has spent twenty-one years hiding Lily’s rights while using the trust’s protection.”

After the call, I told Ethan everything.

He sat very still.

“My father knew Vanessa wanted her baby.”

“Yes.”

“And he used the adoption to change the company’s future.”

“Yes.”

Ethan walked to the hotel window.

For years, he had believed the company represented his father’s confidence in him. Now he understood it had also represented what Arthur took from Vanessa.

“I don’t want it,” he said.

“The company?”

“Not if keeping it means continuing this.”

The next morning, Maya petitioned the court for access to the trust records.

Within three hours, Evelyn filed an emergency response.

She claimed the stress of pregnancy had made me vulnerable to manipulation by Vanessa and Lily.

She also requested that the court restrict me from discussing Bennett family finances.

Attached to the filing was a private report from a doctor I had never met.

It described me as emotionally unstable.

At the bottom was Evelyn’s handwritten note:

If Claire remains in Ethan’s life, neither of them can be trusted with the child’s future.
