The Woman Standing Above Me

## chapter 01 - The Woman Standing Above Me
The white marble staircase glowed beneath hundreds of tiny lights, making the Bennett mansion look softer than it had ever felt to me.
I sat halfway down the steps in a champagne-colored dress, one hand pressed over my seven-month belly and the other wrapped around my phone. Around the corner, glasses clinked and a string quartet played for two hundred guests attending the Bennett Foundation’s annual gala.
Above me stood my sister-in-law, Vanessa Bennett.
Her silver gown caught the chandelier light. Her dark hair was pulled into a perfect low bun, and her diamond earrings moved each time she tilted her head.
She folded her arms and smiled.
“You should be grateful, Claire,” she said. “Most women in your position would have been removed quietly.”
My daughter shifted beneath my palm.
“My position?”
“The temporary wife. The inconvenient pregnancy. The woman who confused Ethan’s kindness with permanence.”
I had come to the staircase because a sharp tightening had passed across my stomach. Vanessa had followed me, closed the doors behind us, and continued the conversation she had begun near the ballroom.
She had already told me that Ethan would lose control of Bennett House Hotels before midnight.
Now she leaned closer.
“He signed the emergency proxy yesterday,” she said. “By morning, I’ll control his shares, the company accounts, and this house.”
“You lied to him about the board investigation.”
“I gave him a crisis. He gave me authority.”
My phone rested against my dress. Before leaving the ballroom, I had tried to call my doctor. The call had gone to voicemail, and without realizing it, I had opened the voice-recording application instead.
A red line moved across the screen.
Vanessa noticed where I was looking.
Her smile disappeared.
Footsteps struck the marble floor.
My husband entered wearing a black shirt, his face already tense.
“Claire?” Ethan hurried toward me. “Why are you sitting on the stairs?”
Vanessa stepped down quickly. “She became emotional. I was trying to calm her.”
I looked at the woman who had spent three years calling me family while arranging my removal from it.
Then I lifted my phone.
“Before you touch me,” I told Ethan, “you need to hear what your sister just said.”
I pressed play.
Vanessa’s voice filled the staircase.
He signed the emergency proxy yesterday. By morning, I’ll control his shares, the company accounts, and this house.
Ethan stared at the screen.
The recording continued.
Once the board removes him, you and your baby will be gone before breakfast.
His face changed slowly. Shock became disbelief, then something colder.
Vanessa backed toward the railing.
“Ethan, that isn’t what it sounds like.”
He looked up at her.
“What exactly is an emergency proxy?”
The ballroom doors opened behind him.
His mother, Evelyn Bennett, stood there in an ivory gown.

She did not look surprised.
Instead, she looked at Vanessa and said quietly, “You promised me Claire would never hear that part.”
