What Vanessa Finally Won

Chapter 14 - What Vanessa Finally Won
Vanessa had believed she was taking control.
In reality, Evelyn had positioned both of her children exactly where she wanted them.
Ethan was removed through the proxy.
Vanessa took public blame for the takeover.
When the sale became unpopular, Evelyn replaced her and presented herself to the board as the only stable Bennett left.
“You helped her,” Ethan said.
Vanessa stared at the kitchen table.
“I believed she was helping me.”
“After everything she did?”
“She said the sale would free Lily from the family. She said I could give her money privately and start over.”
“And you believed money would repair twenty-one years.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You believed signing a document would calm a lender. We both believed what we needed to believe.”
The truth landed hard because it was fair.
I poured Vanessa a glass of water.
She looked at it but did not drink.
“Why come here?” I asked.
“Because Mother scheduled the sale vote for Friday. Once it passes, the hotels will be divided, the employees will lose their protections, and the original trust will become almost impossible to enforce.”
“You still care about the trust?”
“I care that she does not win by erasing Lily twice.”
Ethan sat across from her.
“What do you want us to do?”
Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a company access card.
“I still have access to the board’s document system until midnight. There are emails showing Mother negotiated with the buyer before the supposed leadership crisis.”
Maya could use the emails to delay the sale.
But the documents would also prove Vanessa knowingly submitted false information about Ethan.
“You could face criminal charges,” I said.
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you destroy the emails?”
Vanessa gave me a tired smile.
“Because for twenty-one years, my mother taught me that protecting the family meant protecting the lie. Lily asked me to become someone else.”
She placed the access card in front of Ethan.
He did not take it.
“You need to provide the documents yourself,” he said.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You want me to confess.”
“I want you to stop asking other people to carry your decisions.”
The room became silent.
Finally, Vanessa picked up the card.
“All right.”
She stood to leave.
At the door, she looked at me.
“I did leak the photograph of you entering the specialist’s office.”
I felt Ethan tense behind me.
Vanessa continued before he could speak.
“I wanted the board to believe the pregnancy was affecting you. I did not release the medical report. Mother did that.”
“Why tell me now?”
“Because an apology that hides the worst part is only another strategy.”
I nodded once.
“I’m not ready to forgive you.”
May you like
“I know.”
For the first time, Vanessa did not argue.
