The Room Nobody Mentioned

Chapter 04 - The Room Nobody Mentioned
The east wing of the Bennett mansion had been closed for as long as I had known the family.
Evelyn said the plumbing was unreliable. Vanessa said the rooms contained nothing but old furniture. Ethan remembered playing there as a child, but after his father died, the doors remained locked.
The anonymous message gave me a reason to question every explanation.
Ethan wanted to call an attorney. I wanted to know why someone had connected Vanessa’s takeover to an abandoned nursery.
We returned to the mansion while the board meeting was underway downtown.
Most of the staff avoided us. Word had spread that Vanessa now controlled the company and the estate. Only Rosa, the housekeeper who had worked for the Bennetts for thirty years, met my eyes.
When I asked for the east-wing key, her hand tightened around the cleaning cloth she carried.
“Mrs. Bennett won’t like it.”
“She doesn’t seem to like much about me.”
Rosa studied my face.
Then she took a small brass key from her pocket.
“The nursery is the last door.”
The room smelled of dust and old paint. Blue wallpaper covered the walls, faded almost gray by time. A sheet had been thrown over a wooden crib.
Ethan stood in the doorway.
“I don’t remember this.”
I moved toward a section where the wallpaper had begun peeling near the window.
Beneath it were pencil marks.
Dates.
Measurements.
And a name written repeatedly in a young woman’s handwriting.
Lily.
Near the floor, someone had drawn a small flower around the words:
Lily Bennett—coming in October.
The date was twenty-one years earlier.
Ethan knelt beside it.
“Vanessa would have been nineteen.”
Rosa remained near the door.
Ethan looked at her. “Who was Lily?”
Her eyes filled, but she said nothing.
“Please,” I whispered.
Rosa closed the door behind us.
“Your sister was pregnant,” she told Ethan. “Your father said the scandal would destroy the hotel expansion. Your mother arranged for the baby to be adopted.”
Ethan went pale.
“I was told Vanessa had surgery.”
“She gave birth in this room.”
I looked at the covered crib and felt my daughter move inside me.
“Was the baby healthy?”
“Yes.”
“Did Vanessa agree to the adoption?”
Rosa took a long breath.
“She signed the papers. But agreement is not always the same as choice.”
Ethan pressed both hands against his face.
“Why didn’t she ever tell me?”
“Your parents made everyone promise silence. They said the baby would have a better life if the Bennett name never followed her.”
A car door slammed outside.
Rosa crossed to the window.
“Mrs. Bennett is home.”
We heard Evelyn’s heels in the hallway.
The nursery door opened.
She saw the torn wallpaper, the uncovered crib, and her son kneeling beside Lily’s name.

For the first time since I had met her, Evelyn Bennett lost control of her face.
“Who gave you the key?”
