Edward’s Last Confession

Chapter 09 - Edward’s Last Confession

Edward’s recording lasted twenty-seven minutes.

He confessed that Nathan was his son.

He admitted hiding the truth because he feared losing Diane and Ethan.

He described reconnecting with Nathan years later and slowly realizing that secrecy was hurting everyone more than honesty would.

Then his tone changed.

“I asked Richard to restructure the business so both boys would have a share.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“Richard said it was too complicated. I told him to do it anyway.”

Edward explained the trust.

The garage property.

The life-insurance reserve.

Then came the sentence Ethan would replay in his head for days.

“If Richard tells you the business was broke, he is lying.”

Lauren covered her mouth.

Nathan stared at the recorder.

Edward continued.

He had discovered unauthorized withdrawals from the trust.

At first, Richard claimed they were temporary loans.

Then he promised to repay them.

Edward threatened to remove him as trustee.

“I should have done it sooner,” Edward said. “That was my mistake.”

The final minutes were not about money.

They were about shame.

Edward apologized to Nathan for making him feel hidden.

He apologized to Ethan for building their relationship on an incomplete truth.

He apologized to Diane for asking her to live beside a secret she never created.

Then he said:

“I hope my sons do better than I did. I hope they choose truth before fear chooses for them.”

The recorder clicked off.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan stood and walked outside.

Lauren followed him to the porch.

He did not look at her.

“My whole childhood feels edited.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

She let the words sit.

Then she said, “You’re right.”

That answer disarmed him.

He finally looked at her.

“I’m angry you didn’t tell me.”

“I know.”

“I don’t know how to trust anyone right now.”

“I know that too.”

Lauren’s eyes were red.

“But Ethan, I need you to hear one thing. Nathan and I never had an affair. Not emotionally. Not physically. Not even close.”

Ethan looked away.

“I believe you.”

She inhaled shakily.

“But?”

“But I don’t know why believing you still hurts.”

Lauren nodded slowly.

“Because I kept the truth from you anyway.”

Inside the house, Nathan’s phone rang.

A moment later, he came to the door.

His face had changed.

“It’s Richard’s lawyer,” he said.

Ethan stood.

“What does he want?”

May you like

Nathan held up the phone.

“He says Richard is accusing me of extortion.”
