The Town Hall Meeting

Chapter 14 - The Town Hall Meeting
Richard had spent thirty years building a reputation in Cedar Ridge.
He sponsored Little League teams.
He served on the hospital foundation.
He donated to the veterans’ center every Christmas.
When the county scheduled a public hearing about the garage property transfer, the room was packed.
Richard arrived in a dark suit.
Ethan came in civilian clothes.
Nathan wore the same black cap from the day they met.
Lauren sat between them.
For once, the image felt right.
Richard’s attorney argued that the original transfer had been lawful and that accounting irregularities did not invalidate ownership.
Maya responded with the forged signature.
The security footage.
The trust ledgers.
The recording from Edward.
Then Gloria Simmons testified.
Richard did not look at her.
Gloria looked directly at him.
“You told me Edward had approved those withdrawals,” she said.
Richard’s attorney objected.
The hearing officer allowed her to continue.
Gloria opened a ledger.
“Then you told me to shred these after the funeral.”
Richard finally looked up.
“That is not what happened.”
Gloria’s voice remained calm.
“I’m eighty-one years old, Richard. I’ve spent twelve years wishing I had been braver. Don’t make me waste the courage I finally found.”
The room went completely quiet.
Ethan felt Lauren squeeze his hand.
After the hearing, reporters crowded the hallway.
One asked Ethan whether he wanted to see his uncle in prison.
Ethan looked toward Richard.
For the first time, Richard appeared old.
Not harmless.
Just exposed.
“I want the truth recorded correctly,” Ethan said. “What happens after that is not mine to decide.”
Nathan gave him a small nod.
Then a reporter shouted a question at Nathan.
“Are you only here for your share of the money?”
Nathan stopped.
Ethan expected him to answer.
Instead, Ethan stepped toward the microphones.
“He’s here because he’s my brother.”
Nathan froze.
Lauren smiled through tears.
The cameras caught it.
By evening, that sentence was everywhere.
But while the town focused on the family reunion, Maya discovered one more account.
And this one was not connected to Edward’s trust.
May you like
It belonged to the Cedar Ridge Veterans Relief Fund.
Richard had been its treasurer for nine years.
