Chapter 01 - The Soldier Came Home Early—and Found a Biker in His Garage, but the Secret His Wife Hid Was Bigger Than Betrayal
## chapter 01 - The Man Beside His Motorcycle
Staff Sergeant Ethan Cole had imagined a hundred versions of coming home.
In most of them, Lauren ran down the driveway before he could even set down his duffel. In one, she cried. In another, she laughed at the stupid welcome-home banner she had promised not to buy. In every version, the first thing Ethan saw was his wife.
He did see Lauren.
He just did not see her alone.
The late Colorado sunlight poured through the open garage door as Ethan stepped inside, still wearing his uniform, his tan duffel hanging from one hand. Lauren stood beside the old black Harley that had belonged to Ethan’s father. Her face went pale the moment she saw him.
Next to her stood a broad-shouldered man in a black T-shirt and cap, tattooed arms exposed, one hand resting on the motorcycle’s handlebar as if he had every right in the world to be there.
Ethan stopped.
Lauren whispered, “You’re home.”
The man turned slowly.
Ethan tightened his grip on the duffel until his knuckles whitened.
“I can see I picked a bad time,” he said.
“Ethan, no,” Lauren answered immediately. “It isn’t what you think.”
The sentence hit him harder than any explanation could have.
The stranger took one step away from the Harley.
“Let her talk.”
Ethan’s eyes snapped toward him. “You don’t get to tell me what to do in my garage.”
Lauren moved between them.
“Please. Both of you.”
Ethan looked at the motorcycle. The side panel had been removed. Tools were spread across the workbench. A small metal box sat beside a folded envelope.
His father’s initials were written across the envelope.
E.C.
Ethan’s anger shifted into confusion.
His father, Edward Cole, had been dead for eleven years.
The stranger removed his cap.
“My name is Nathan Reed,” he said quietly. “And before you throw me out, there’s something you need to know.”
Ethan stared at him.
Nathan’s eyes were the same gray-blue as his father’s.

Then Nathan said the six words that changed the meaning of everything in the garage.
“Edward Cole was my father too.”
