The Letter Ethan Wrote Back

Chapter 19 - The Letter Ethan Wrote Back
Six months after the garage opened, Ethan found Edward’s original recording in a desk drawer.
He listened to it once more.
This time, he did not hear only guilt.
He heard a man who had known he failed and still hoped his children might do better.
Ethan took out a sheet of paper.
He wrote a letter to his father.
Dad,
I was angry at you for leaving me half the truth.
Then I realized I’ve done my own version of that.
I thought silence protected people.
It doesn’t.
It just makes them carry the weight without knowing what they’re carrying.
Nathan is stubborn.
So am I.
We argue about tools, schedules, coffee, and whether customers should ever be allowed to bring their own parts.
You would probably enjoy that.
Lily calls me Uncle Ethan now.
Lauren and I are okay.
Not the old kind of okay where we avoid the hard things.
A better kind.
We talk.
Sometimes badly.
But we talk.
The garage is open again.
Not yours.
Ours.
Maybe that was what you wanted all along.
Ethan folded the letter.
He did not hide it in the motorcycle.
He framed it.
Then he hung it in the office beside a photograph of Edward, Ethan, Nathan, Lauren, and Lily taken on opening day.
Nathan walked in and read it.
“You called me stubborn.”
“You are.”
“You’re worse.”
“Probably.”
Nathan looked at the photograph.
Then at Ethan.
“You ever wonder what would’ve happened if he’d just introduced us at that county fair?”
“Yeah.”
“All the time?”
“Not anymore.”
Nathan raised an eyebrow.
Ethan looked through the office window.
Lauren was helping a veteran fill out an apprenticeship application.
Lily sat at a workbench doing homework.
The garage doors were open to the afternoon sun.
“I can’t change the years we lost,” Ethan said. “I’d rather stop losing the ones we have.”
Nathan nodded.
That evening, Ethan and Lauren walked home together.
At the same driveway where Ethan had arrived months earlier, he stopped.
Lauren looked at him.
“What?”
He smiled.
“The first time I came home, I thought I was walking into the end of my marriage.”
Lauren leaned against him.
“And instead?”
May you like
Ethan looked back at the glowing garage.
“I think I walked into the truth.”
