The Money Meant for Veterans

Chapter 15 - The Money Meant for Veterans
Ethan stared at the spreadsheet on Maya’s screen.
He recognized the fund immediately.
Two years earlier, it had helped a soldier from his unit pay rent while recovering from surgery.
The idea that Richard might have taken money from it made the family case feel suddenly much larger.
Maya cautioned him.
“We don’t know that yet.”
But the transaction pattern looked familiar.
Small transfers.
Consulting fees.
Administrative reimbursements.
Payments to companies connected to R.C. Holdings.
The district attorney’s office opened an investigation.
Richard’s assets were temporarily frozen.
The development company withdrew from the garage purchase.
The next morning, Richard came to Ethan’s house.
This time, he did not walk into the garage.
He stood at the end of the driveway.
Ethan went outside alone.
“You won,” Richard said.
“This isn’t a game.”
Richard laughed weakly.
“That’s what people say after they win.”
He looked toward the garage.
“Your father was going to ruin everything.”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“He was going to expose you.”
“He was going to destroy the family.”
“No. You were afraid he would stop protecting your version of it.”
Richard looked at him.
For a moment, Ethan saw something like shame.
Then it disappeared.
“I paid bills nobody else knew about. I kept the business alive. I took loans and planned to repay them.”
“You forged his name after he died.”
Richard looked away.
Ethan waited.
There was no explanation that could change the fact.
Finally Richard said, “You think Nathan would have stayed if there were no money?”
Ethan almost answered.
Then he stopped.
A few weeks earlier, the question would have poisoned him.
Now it did not.
“Nathan signed a document yesterday waiving any claim to the house.”
Richard looked surprised.
“He only wants what Dad intended him to have.”
“And you trust him?”
Ethan considered the question.
“I’m learning to.”
Richard’s mouth twisted.
“Trust is expensive.”
Ethan looked back toward his home.
“No. Secrets are.”
Richard stood there another few seconds.
Then he left.
That afternoon, Ethan received a call from Nathan.
His voice sounded strained.
“Can you come to the hospital?”
Ethan stood immediately.
May you like
“What happened?”
“It’s Lily.”
