The Visit Lauren Never Mentioned

Chapter 05 - The Visit Lauren Never Mentioned
Richard Cole had always known how to make threats sound like advice.
Lauren told Ethan that his uncle arrived just after nine on a Tuesday night, wearing his usual gray suit and carrying a bottle of wine as though he had come for dinner.
He never raised his voice.
That was what frightened her most.
He asked why she had been requesting old property records.
Then he asked whether a man named Nathan Reed had contacted her.
Lauren denied knowing anything.
Richard smiled and told her family history could be “dangerous when misunderstood.”
Before leaving, he paused beside Edward’s Harley.
“He asked if Ethan had ever opened the seat compartment,” Lauren said.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“And you still didn’t tell me?”
“I called you ten minutes later.”
“I remember.”
“You sounded exhausted.”
“So you decided I couldn’t handle the truth?”
“I decided I wasn’t going to drop a family bomb on you when you were seven thousand miles away and couldn’t do anything about it.”
“I could have known.”
“Yes,” Lauren said. “And you could have spent the last three weeks unable to sleep, unable to come home, and furious at people you couldn’t confront.”
Ethan stared at her.
She stared back.
For the first time since he had entered the garage, Lauren’s fear gave way to anger.
“You don’t get to act like I was having fun here, Ethan.”
Nathan quietly stepped away from the motorcycle.
“This is between you two.”
“No,” Ethan said. “Apparently nothing is just between us anymore.”
Lauren flinched.
Ethan regretted it instantly.
But he did not take it back.
The deployment had already stretched their marriage thin. Ethan had spent the last year becoming very good at saying he was fine. Lauren had become very good at pretending she believed him.
Now there was another silence between them.
One with a name.
Nathan.
A truck slowed outside the open garage.
All three turned.
A silver sedan stopped at the curb.
Richard Cole stepped out.
He looked at Ethan’s uniform.
Then at Nathan.
Then at the open metal box on the workbench.
For the first time in Ethan’s life, he saw genuine fear on his uncle’s face.
Richard recovered quickly.
May you like
He smiled.
“Well,” he said. “Looks like the whole family is finally together.”
