What Thomas Bennett Did

Chapter 08 - What Thomas Bennett Did

Clara did not board the train.

She and Daniel sat on a bench beneath the station clock until the platform emptied.

Then she told him everything.

Thomas's drinking.

The bank threats.

The conversation the night before Daniel vanished.

The words about giving the boy away.

Daniel listened without interruption.

When she finished, he asked only one question.

"Why didn't you tell the sheriff?"

"I did."

"And?"

"Harold Hale's brother was the sheriff."

Daniel lowered his head.

Of course.

Bellweather had not been a town where one poor woman could challenge a family that owned the bank, the grain warehouse, and half the county's loans.

Clara had searched anyway.

She sent letters to every station along the rail line.

She placed notices in newspapers.

She worked laundry jobs to pay private agents who disappeared with her money.

Then Thomas died of pneumonia four years later.

Clara found a small brass key sewn into the lining of his work coat.

She never discovered what it opened.

"I kept it," she said.

"Why?"

"Because it was the only secret he couldn't take to the grave."

Daniel stood.

"Where is it?"

"Mrs. Bell's store."

They returned after midnight.

Behind Clara's old bed, inside a cracked teacup, lay the key.

Daniel turned it over in his palm.

Stamped into the metal were two letters.

H.H.

Harold Hale.

Victor's grandfather.

The next morning, Daniel visited the old Hale Bank building, now used for county records.

The basement contained a wall of abandoned safe-deposit boxes.

Box 214 opened with the brass key.

Inside was a stack of letters tied with blue ribbon.

Every envelope was addressed to Daniel Mercer.

Every envelope had Clara's handwriting.

None had ever been mailed.

There was also a single note from Thomas Bennett.

Daniel opened it.

The first line made him sit down.

Clara never agreed to this.

The second line was worse.

Hale says if I tell her where the boy went, he'll put me in prison and take Ruth too.

Daniel stared at Clara.

"Ruth?"

"My daughter," she whispered. "Your sister."

Daniel looked toward Luke and Jamie waiting upstairs.

For the first time, he understood.

May you like

Those boys were not simply children Clara fed.

They were his nephews.
