The Letter From the Other Mother

Chapter 19 - The Letter From the Other Mother
Daniel read the letter alone first.
Then he handed it to Clara.
His adoptive mother, Evelyn Mercer, had written it three years before her death.
Dear Daniel,
If you are reading this, then the worst thing I feared is true. Someone lied to us about your first mother.
Evelyn explained that she had learned, near the end of her life, that Harold Hale's adoption records were unreliable.
She hired an investigator.
He found references to a Clara Bennett.
But before he could confirm whether Clara was alive, Evelyn became ill.
She did not tell Daniel because she feared destroying the only family story he knew with another uncertainty.
It was a mistake.
She admitted that.
Then came the final paragraph.
If Clara is alive, tell her I am sorry that my joy was built on her grief. I loved you as my son. I hope she will understand that loving you was never the crime. The lie was.
Clara finished reading and pressed the letter to her chest.
Daniel stared at the floor.
"I blamed her too."
Clara sat beside him.
"She loved you."
"So did you."
"Yes."
"How am I supposed to hold both?"
Clara smiled sadly.
"With two hands."
Daniel laughed, then cried.
Not the controlled tears of a businessman at a funeral.
The helpless grief of a boy who had spent seventeen years choosing between two mothers because he believed loving one betrayed the other.
Clara held him until the porch light burned low.
The next day, Daniel made a decision.
The community kitchen would not carry his name.
It would not carry Clara's.
It would be called Evelyn's Table.
Clara approved.
"She fed you when I couldn't."
At the opening ceremony, Daniel placed the first loaf of bread on the counter.
Clara looked at it and remembered the thin slice she had held on a tin plate the day the black cars arrived.
This time, there was enough bread for everyone.
But one thing remained unfinished.
Daniel still carried the surname Mercer.
Clara never asked him to change it.
At the ceremony, he took the microphone.
"My name is Daniel Mercer Bennett."
Clara looked up.

He smiled.
"I think I've finally earned all of it."
