The Woman They Called a Liar

Chapter 15 - The Woman They Called a Liar

The court hearing drew people from three counties.

Clara hated every minute of it.

She hated the reporters.

She hated the flashbulbs.

She hated hearing strangers discuss the worst years of her life as though they were entertainment.

Victor testified from the witness stand.

He admitted that his grandfather kept forged deeds.

He admitted knowing the Bellweather rail acquisitions could expose the old fraud.

He admitted leaking the newspaper story about Clara.

Then Daniel's lawyer asked the question everyone had waited for.

"Did Clara Bennett knowingly surrender her son?"

Victor looked at Clara.

"No."

A murmur moved through the room.

Clara closed her eyes.

Seventeen years.

One word.

No.

It should have felt like victory.

Instead, she thought of the little boy waiting at a railway platform.

Daniel's lawyer produced the original Hale ledger and Thomas Bennett's confession note.

The judge ruled that the surrender document had no legal validity.

Then he addressed Daniel.

"Mr. Mercer, the record will reflect that you were unlawfully separated from your mother through fraud."

Daniel's face did not change.

But beneath the table, Clara felt his hand reach for hers.

She held it.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Daniel stopped at the steps.

"My mother did not sell me," he said.

The crowd quieted.

"She was robbed of a child. I was robbed of a family. Bellweather was robbed in quieter ways for years."

He looked directly toward the cameras.

"That ends now."

The statement made headlines.

But the next morning, another story appeared.

MERCER SEEKS CONTROL OF RESTORED LAND THROUGH FAMILY CLAIM.

Someone alleged Daniel planned to use Clara as a legal front to seize the town.

The accusation was absurd.

It was also effective.

A brick crashed through the General Store window before dawn.

No one was hurt.

But tied around it was a note.

GO BACK TO CHICAGO.

Luke picked it up.

"Are we in danger?"

Daniel stared at the broken glass.

Then Clara took the note from him and tore it in half.

May you like

"No," she said.

"We're in a fight."
