The Contract Clara Refused to Sign

Chapter 17 - The Contract Clara Refused to Sign
Daniel returned from Chicago with a contract.
Clara refused to sign it.
He stared at her across Mrs. Bell's counter.
"You haven't read it."
"I read the first line."
"Which says?"
"Director of Community Welfare."
Daniel leaned back.
"You object to the title?"
"I object to you inventing a job for your mother."
"It's a real job."
"I'm sixty-two."
"That is not an argument."
"I own one good dress."
"Still not an argument."
"I don't like meetings."
"Now that is serious."
Clara almost smiled.
Then she became quiet.
"Daniel, I don't want people thinking I used you."
He closed the contract.
"People already thought you sold me."
She looked at him.
"We cannot live according to the worst thing strangers are willing to believe."
The sentence settled between them.
Clara finally read the contract.
The job was not charity.
She would oversee food assistance, worker housing complaints, and school access for families living along the new rail corridor.
Daniel had created the position because he understood something his board did not.
Clara knew what poverty hid.
She knew when a mother said she had eaten but had not.
She knew when a child stopped asking for seconds because there were no seconds.
She signed.
On one condition.
"No special salary."
Daniel sighed.
"Mother."
"Fair salary."
"Agreed."
"And Mrs. Bell gets final say on the kitchen."
"Agreed."
"And Luke and Jamie finish school."
"That is not related to the contract."
"It is now."
Daniel signed beneath her.
That night, he gave the boys a gift.
Not toys.
Not money.
A framed photograph.
It showed a young Clara holding eight-year-old Daniel beside the Bennett farmhouse.
The image had been found in Harold Hale's files.
Luke studied it.
"You looked like Jamie."
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"No."
He glanced toward Clara.
"I looked like someone who thought his mother would always be there."
Clara touched his shoulder.
"I was."
Before he could answer, Jamie ran in from the porch.
"Uncle Daniel!"
It was the first time he had used the word.
Daniel froze.

Jamie held up a telegram.
"The judge says they found Grandpa's farm."
