Fifty Dollars

Chapter 03 - Fifty Dollars

Clara sat on the General Store porch after sunset, the forged paper trembling between her fingers.

Daniel remained standing.

He had refused the chair Mrs. Bell offered him, refused coffee, and refused every attempt at kindness. He wanted answers, and he wanted them clean.

Clara had none.

"Your father was desperate," she began.

Daniel laughed once, without humor.

"Desperate enough to sell his son?"

"I don't know."

"You were married to him."

"That didn't mean I knew everything he was capable of."

Clara looked down at the document again.

Her husband's name had been Thomas Bennett. Before the drought, before the failed wheat crop, before the debts, he had been a good carpenter and an easy man to love.

Then the bank began sending notices.

Then Thomas started drinking.

Then Daniel disappeared.

Clara had always believed a train accident had taken him.

That was the story Thomas gave her.

He claimed Daniel had followed him to the freight yard, climbed aboard a moving car, and vanished somewhere between Bellweather and Wichita.

Clara had searched stations for months.

Daniel listened with a face like stone.

"You expect me to believe my father lied about a train accident?"

"I expect nothing from you."

"Good."

That answer hurt more than anger.

Luke and Jamie watched from behind the store window.

Clara lowered her voice.

"Did the Mercers treat you well?"

Daniel's eyes changed slightly.

"They gave me food. Education. A name people respected."

"That wasn't what I asked."

His silence answered her.

Daniel finally sat.

"My adoptive father told me you and Thomas were dead. Years later, I found that surrender paper in his safe. I thought he'd lied to protect me from knowing you sold me."

Clara shook her head.

"I would have sold my own blood before I sold my child."

Daniel looked at her sharply.

It was an old Bellweather expression. He remembered her saying it once when he was small and feverish.

Something inside him shifted.

Then Victor stepped onto the porch.

"Daniel, we have a problem."

He handed Daniel a county map.

Red marks covered dozens of properties.

Including the General Store.

Including the land where Clara's soup pot still smoked.

Daniel studied the page.

"What is this?"

Victor hesitated.

"The land your company came here to purchase."

Clara looked from the map to Daniel.

"You came to buy Bellweather?"

Daniel did not answer.

Victor did.

"Not buy it."

May you like

He folded his arms.

"Clear it."
