The Mortgage With Her Signature

Chapter 07 - The Mortgage With Her Signature
The mortgage release looked authentic.
Clara's signature appeared at the bottom.
Again.
She denied signing it.
Again.
But denial was no longer enough for Daniel.
He had spent seventeen years building his life on documents. Contracts had made him rich because ink could be trusted when people could not.
Now every important piece of paper from his childhood carried his mother's name.
Clara noticed the doubt in his eyes.
"You believe him."
"I don't know what I believe."
"That's not the same thing."
"No, it isn't."
Victor watched them with quiet satisfaction.
He explained that his grandfather, Harold Hale, had been a banker, not a criminal. Thomas Bennett had approached him for help. The Mercers wanted a child. Thomas wanted debt relief.
A transaction had been made.
"Painful?" Victor said. "Certainly. But not mysterious."
Clara stepped toward him.
"Then explain the train story."
Victor shrugged.
"A husband protecting his wife from shame."
Daniel flinched.
Clara saw it and understood what Victor was doing.
He was not proving she had sold Daniel.
He was making it easier for Daniel to believe she had.
That night, Clara packed a small suitcase.
Luke found her folding her apron.
"Where are we going?"
"You're staying with Mrs. Bell for a few days."
"And you?"
Clara forced a smile.
"I have somewhere to go."
Luke's face hardened.
"You're leaving because of him."
"No."
"He's rich and you're ashamed."
Clara knelt.
"I am not ashamed of being poor."
"Then what are you ashamed of?"
She could not answer.
Because there was one truth she had never told Daniel.
Thomas had come home drunk the night before Daniel disappeared and said a man from the bank wanted their boy.
Clara had laughed at him.
Then Thomas had said something worse.
"If we don't give them Daniel, they take the farm. Then we all starve."
Clara had slapped the table and sworn no one would take her son.
The next morning, Daniel was gone.
She had always believed Thomas had acted alone.
Until now.
At the train station, Daniel found Clara waiting for the midnight departure.
"You were going to leave without telling me."
She held her suitcase tighter.
"You already lost me once."
May you like
His voice broke.
"Don't make me lose you before I know the truth."
