Mae’s Nine-Year Secret

Chapter 08 - Mae’s Nine-Year Secret
That evening, the diner closed early.
Mae turned off the red OPEN sign and found Jax sitting in Booth Seven, staring at the photograph.
“I deserve whatever you want to say,” she told him.
Jax did not look up. “Why didn’t she put my name on the birth certificate?”
“Because you disappeared.”
“I was in a county program for ninety days, not dead.”
“You told Lila you wanted no part of her future.”
“I was grieving.”
“She knew that. But she was nineteen, alone, and holding a newborn.”
Jax finally looked at Mae. “And Daniel?”
“He was volunteering at the clinic where she worked. He found her an apartment, paid for childcare, helped her finish nursing school. He looked like rescue.”
Mae sat across from him.
“Three years later, she called me. Daniel had adopted Noah. She said he had become controlling, but every time she tried to leave, he reminded her she had no money and no legal claim strong enough to win against him.”
“Why did she wait nine years?”
“Shame. Fear. Hope that he would change. The same reasons people stay in bad houses after the doors stop feeling like doors.”
Mae slid a second page across the table.
It was the missing page from Lila’s letter.
Jax,
If you ever become sober, steady, and kind again, Mae will know. She will tell you when the truth can help Noah instead of hurting him.
Please do not hate me for choosing safety before love.
Jax read it in silence.
Mae’s eyes filled. “I kept waiting for the right moment. Then every year made the truth harder to tell.”
“You were not protecting us,” he said. “You were protecting yourself from being blamed.”
Mae nodded because it was true.
Jax stood to leave.
“Where are you going?”
“To find my son.”
“You cannot break him out of foster care.”
“I know.”
That answer surprised her.
Jax placed the flash drive beside an old laptop and called someone he had not spoken to in twelve years.
Her name was Sarah Keene.
She had once been the public defender assigned to keep Jax out of prison.
Now she was one of the best family-law attorneys in the state.
When she answered, Jax said, “I need you to believe I’m not the man you met in 2014.”

Sarah was silent for a long moment.
Then she replied, “Show me.”
