The Man in the Gray Car

Chapter 05 - The Man in the Gray Car
Noah’s face went white when he heard the word blood.
Jax knelt in front of him, lowering his voice until the diner disappeared around them.
“We do not know what happened to your mother.”
“Daniel found us.”
“How do you know?”
Noah glanced toward Officer Ruiz. “Mom said grown-ups believe him because he wears expensive shoes.”
Elena heard him.
“What else did she say?”
Noah pressed his lips together.
Jax understood. Lila had taught the boy not to trust uniforms, courts, or anyone connected to Daniel.
“You trusted me enough to come here,” Jax said. “Tell me what happened last night.”
Noah stared at the old photograph.
“Mom woke me up after midnight. She packed my backpack and drove to the motel. She kept looking behind us. Then somebody knocked on the door.”
“Who?”
“I didn’t see. Mom put me in the bathroom and told me to climb out the little window if she said the word sunrise.”
His small hands began to shake.
“I heard Daniel’s voice. He said she had stolen something that belonged to him. Mom yelled sunrise. So I ran.”
Jax looked at Elena. “Does that sound like a custody disagreement?”
Elena did not answer. She called her captain and asked that Lila’s car be treated as a possible crime scene.
Then another patrol officer entered with news that changed the room again.
Daniel Rourke was outside.
He came in wearing a charcoal suit and calm concern. He was handsome in the polished way campaign posters liked—silver at the temples, perfect posture, no wasted movement.
When he saw Noah, his face softened.
“There you are, buddy.”
Noah backed into Jax.
Daniel stopped.
“That man is not your father,” he said gently. “He is confused, and your mother is sick.”
Jax rose.
Daniel’s eyes moved over the tattoos, the leather vest, and the scar across Jax’s knuckles. He did not look intimidated. He looked satisfied.
“This is exactly where Lila said you would bring him,” Daniel said.
“You knew about me.”
“I knew about a regrettable period in my wife’s life.”
Noah spoke from behind Jax. “You hurt Mom.”
Daniel’s smile vanished for half a second.
Then he turned to Officer Ruiz.
“My attorney has the custody order. I want my son returned.”
Elena looked from Daniel to Noah.
“I need to verify the paperwork.”

Daniel stepped closer and whispered something only Jax could hear.
“Keep the boy tonight if you can. By tomorrow, every person in this county will believe you kidnapped him.”
