The Hearing

Chapter 16 - The Hearing
The county courthouse was crowded before nine.
Reporters filled the steps. Daniel entered through the front doors in a dark suit, flanked by Calvin and two associates. He looked composed again.
Jax entered through a side door with Sarah, Lila, Mae, and Noah.
Noah wore a borrowed blazer that was too large at the shoulders. He carried the framed photograph beneath one arm.
Inside the courtroom, Daniel’s attorney attacked the search warrant, Lila’s credibility, and Jax’s history.
He displayed old arrest records and described Jax as a man with a pattern of violence.
Sarah did not deny the past.
“Mr. Mercer was reckless,” she said. “He was angry. He made choices he regrets. But the issue before this court is not whether he was imperfect nine years ago. The issue is whether Daniel Rourke used money, influence, and false medical claims to control a woman and conceal the identity of a child’s biological father.”
Daniel’s attorney called Dr. Vale.
The doctor claimed Lila had been delusional and dangerous when admitted.
Then Sarah showed the court that Daniel’s foundation had donated two million dollars to Willow Ridge and paid Dr. Vale as a consultant.
The doctor’s confidence weakened.
Officer Ruiz testified that Lila’s car had been staged and that Daniel’s security contractor had accessed the location before police arrived.
Calvin objected repeatedly.
The judge allowed most of the testimony but had not yet ruled on the recording.
Then Daniel took the stand.
He described himself as the only father Noah had ever known.
“I loved that boy from infancy,” he said. “I gave him stability while Mr. Mercer lived outside the law.”
Jax felt Noah stiffen beside him.
Sarah asked, “How many school plays did you attend last year?”
Daniel paused.
“How many times did you take Noah to the doctor?”
“My wife handled appointments.”
“What is his favorite book?”
Daniel looked toward Noah for help.
Noah looked down.
Sarah placed the old photograph on the evidence table.
“Do you know when this was taken?”
“No.”
“Lila does. Jax does. Mae does. Noah does. You built a legal claim, Mr. Rourke. You did not build a relationship.”
Daniel’s face tightened.

The judge called a recess before ruling on the recording.
As everyone stood, Noah whispered to Sarah, “I need to tell the judge something alone.”
