The Locker at North Station

Chapter 06 - The Locker at North Station

Officer Ruiz refused to release Noah to either man until child services arrived.

Daniel left with the confidence of someone who believed time worked for him.

Jax knew it probably did.

Mae took Noah upstairs to the small apartment above the diner while Elena remained below. Jax followed and found the boy sitting on a narrow bed, emptying his backpack.

There was a toothbrush, two shirts, a library book, a granola bar, and a small brass key taped beneath the cardboard bottom.

Noah handed it to Jax.

“Mom said you would know where it goes.”

Stamped into the metal were three numbers: 317.

Jax did not know until Mae saw it.

“North Station lockers,” she said. “Lila used one when she worked here. She said Daniel searched the house whenever she left.”

They had less than an hour before child services arrived.

Elena should have stopped them. Instead, she looked at Noah’s frightened face and told Jax she needed coffee from the gas station across the road.

“Twenty minutes,” she said. “After that, I never gave you permission to leave.”

Jax and Mae drove to North Station in Jax’s old pickup. Noah stayed hidden on the floor behind the seat.

Locker 317 contained a canvas nurse’s bag.

Inside were copies of bank transfers, hospital forms, photographs of bruised doors and shattered phones, and a flash drive wrapped in a child’s sock.

There was also a sealed envelope addressed to Noah.

Jax opened the nurse’s bag wider and found a birth certificate.

The father’s line read: Unknown.

Beneath it lay a second document—an unsigned petition to establish paternity, with Jax Mercer’s full name typed across the top.

Mae covered her mouth.

Lila had prepared to tell the truth years ago.

The flash drive held dozens of audio files, but most were encrypted.

One recording opened.

Lila’s voice filled the truck cab.

“If you are hearing this, Daniel has taken control of the hospital account and probably convinced people I am unstable. He has been moving money from Noah’s trust. I need proof before I run.”

A man’s voice sounded in the background.

Daniel.

“Who are you talking to?”

The recording ended.

A shadow moved across the truck window.

Calvin Price stood outside with two men.

May you like

He tapped once on the glass.

“Mr. Rourke would like his property back.”
