The Woman in Room 214

Chapter 12 - The Woman in Room 214
The files opened into a record of Daniel Rourke’s private life.
There were bank statements showing transfers from Noah’s trust into companies Daniel controlled. Emails in which Daniel pressured Lila to sign medical powers of attorney. Audio recordings of him threatening to ruin her career if she challenged the adoption.
But the most important file was incomplete.
Lila’s voice said, “Daniel admitted he changed the paternity documents. He knows Jax is Noah’s father. I recorded—”
Then the audio broke into static.
Sarah cursed under her breath. “We need the rest.”
Mae pointed to a file named mercy.
It contained forty seconds of Daniel speaking to someone named Dr. Vale.
“Keep her calm until the hearing. After Noah is legally secured, we can discuss long-term care.”
It was not proof of a crime by itself, but it was enough for Officer Ruiz to request a welfare check.
That evening, Elena entered Willow Ridge with a county investigator.
Jax waited outside in his truck for three hours.
At eleven seventeen, Elena called.
“Room 214,” she said. “Come to the service entrance. Sarah is getting an emergency order.”
Jax found Lila beneath a thin hospital blanket, her face pale, her wrists bruised from old medical bands. She looked smaller than he remembered, but the shape of her mouth was the same.
Her eyes opened when he said her name.
For several seconds, she stared as if he belonged to a dream.
Then she whispered, “Did Noah find you?”
Jax sat beside the bed.
“He found me.”
“Is he safe?”
The question cut through him.
“He is with Daniel.”
Lila tried to sit up. The monitor beside her quickened.
“No. Daniel knows about the trust. He knows the adoption can be challenged. He will make Noah say whatever he needs.”
Jax steadied her without gripping too tightly.
“I’m getting him back.”
Lila looked at his face, searching for the reckless man she had left.
“What if you get angry?” she asked.
“I already did.”
“And?”
“I stayed outside the gate.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“You finally learned.”
Before Jax could answer, Dr. Vale entered with two security officers.
“This patient is not authorized to have visitors.”
Officer Ruiz stepped in behind him.
“She is now.”
Then Sarah came through the door holding an emergency order.

Daniel’s control over Lila had just ended.
His control over Noah had not.
