Daniel’s Perfect Story

Chapter 14 - Daniel’s Perfect Story

Daniel went on television that afternoon.

He sat beneath warm studio lights and spoke softly about protecting his family from “a dangerous man exploiting a vulnerable woman.” He never insulted Jax directly. He did not need to.

The old booking photograph appeared beside him while he described years of fear.

At the garage, the mechanics watched in silence.

Jax turned off the screen.

“He is better at this than we are,” one of them said.

“No,” Sarah replied. “He is better at appearances. That is not the same as truth.”

Getting into Daniel’s house legally was impossible before the hearing. Stealing the compass would destroy their case.

Then Mrs. Alvarez, Noah’s former foster mother, called.

Noah had hidden something in his jacket before being transferred. She had just found it while preparing his clothes for pickup.

It was a hand-drawn map of Daniel’s study.

A red X marked the desk drawer.

Below it Noah had written: Mom’s little card.

“He knew,” Jax said.

“He listened,” Lila corrected from her hospital bed. “Children hear the truths adults think they hide.”

Officer Ruiz could not search Daniel’s home without a warrant. Sarah took Lila’s statement, the financial records, and Noah’s map to a judge.

At ten forty that night, the warrant was approved.

Elena led the search.

Jax waited across the street again, this time beside Lila in Sarah’s car.

Police carried out computers, document boxes, and the brass toy compass.

Daniel stood on the front steps in shirtsleeves, perfectly calm.

When he saw Lila, his expression changed.

Not to fear.

To betrayal.

“You embarrassed me,” he called across the street.

Lila lowered the car window.

“No, Daniel. I survived you.”

For the first time, reporters captured his calm slipping.

He shouted that she was ungrateful, sick, and incapable of raising a child.

The cameras recorded every word.

Inside the compass, investigators found a memory card.

The files were intact.

One recording contained Daniel’s voice admitting he had forged Jax’s signature on a consent waiver, pressured Lila into the adoption, and moved Noah’s money through shell companies.

Sarah listened once and said, “This can win the case.”

Then Officer Ruiz received another call.

Noah was missing from Daniel’s house.

Daniel claimed he had no idea where the boy had gone.
