The Man at the Door

Chapter 08 - The Man at the Door

Adrian switched off the lights.

Rachel pulled Noah behind the army trunk.

The footsteps stopped.

A knock followed.

"Adrian?"

He recognized the voice.

His driver.

Marcus Reed.

Adrian cautiously opened the door.

Marcus stood alone.

"You were followed," he said.

Adrian looked behind him.

"By who?"

"Victor's security people."

Rachel stiffened.

Marcus raised both hands.

"I'm not with them."

Adrian wasn't convinced.

Marcus had worked for him eleven years.

He knew Adrian's routines.

His homes.

His private meetings.

Everything.

"Why should I trust you?"

Marcus reached inside his jacket.

Rachel moved protectively in front of Noah.

But Marcus only removed an envelope.

"Ethan gave me this four years ago."

Adrian stared at him.

"You knew he was alive?"

"I knew someone claiming to be him contacted me."

"Four years?"

Adrian's anger exploded.

"You let me mourn my brother for eighteen years!"

Marcus didn't flinch.

"Ethan made me promise."

"I was his brother!"

"And he believed anyone close to you might report him to Victor."

Marcus handed him the envelope.

Inside was a key.

And an address in Wisconsin.

Rachel whispered.

"What is it?"

Marcus looked at Noah.

"A cabin."

"Whose cabin?"

Marcus met Adrian's eyes.

"Your brother's."

Adrian's heart pounded.

"Is Ethan there?"

"I don't know."

"When did you last see him?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Six months ago."

The same time the photograph had been taken.

Adrian felt betrayal rise through him again.

"You've been lying to me."

"I've been keeping him alive."

"Then take me to him."

Marcus shook his head.

"Not tonight."

"Why?"

"Because Victor knows about the cabin."

Adrian looked toward the door.

Outside, headlights appeared through the cracked metal entrance.

May you like

Marcus whispered one sentence.

"We need to leave now."
