Learning How to Come Home

Chapter 18 - Learning How to Come Home

Rachel did not take Ethan back immediately.

She gave him something harder.

A chance.

They moved into separate rooms.

They attended counseling.

They argued.

They cried.

They sometimes went days without speaking.

Then they tried again.

Noah watched everything with the blunt wisdom only children possess.

One afternoon, he asked Adrian:

"Why doesn't Mom just forgive Dad?"

Adrian considered his answer.

"Because forgiveness isn't pretending nothing happened."

"Then what is it?"

"It's deciding whether someone deserves the chance to do better."

Noah thought about that.

"Does Dad?"

Adrian watched Ethan helping Rachel repair a broken porch step.

"He's trying."

"Is that enough?"

"Sometimes trying is where enough begins."

Noah nodded.

Then handed Adrian the purple microphone.

"Your turn."

"My turn for what?"

"Sing."

Adrian laughed.

"Absolutely not."

Noah switched on the speaker.

Ethan noticed and started chanting.

"Sing! Sing! Sing!"

Rachel joined him.

For the first time in his life, Adrian Cole stood in a backyard and sang terribly in front of people who loved him.

No investors.

No cameras.

No board members.

No limousine waiting outside.

Just family.

Later that night, Rachel found Ethan sitting alone on the porch.

He was holding the skull dog tag.

"I spent years hating this thing," he said.

Rachel sat beside him.

"Why?"

"Because it reminded me of Adrian."

"And now?"

Ethan looked through the window.

Inside, Noah was laughing with his uncle.

"Now it reminds me I found my way back."

Rachel quietly took his hand.

It was not complete forgiveness.

May you like

Not yet.

But it was enough for Ethan to stay.
