The Empire That Fell

Chapter 17 - The Empire That Fell
Cole Capital did not survive unchanged.
Months of investigations uncovered corruption throughout the organization.
Adrian could have fought to preserve his position.
Instead, he resigned.
The media called it a collapse.
A humiliation.
The fall of a billionaire.
Adrian saw it differently.
For the first time since he was twenty-four, he was free.
He sold several personal properties.
Used part of the money to protect employee pensions affected by the scandal.
Then he created a fund for military families dealing with missing-service-member cases and bureaucratic identification errors.
Ethan initially refused to participate.
"I don't deserve to be the face of anything."
Adrian disagreed.
"You're not the face."
"What am I?"
"The warning."
Ethan eventually began speaking privately with veterans who struggled to return to civilian life.
Rachel's health slowly improved after receiving proper treatment.
She refused Adrian's offer of a luxury house.
But she accepted something smaller.
A modest home near a good school.
"It's a loan," she insisted.
Adrian smiled.
"Of course."
It wasn't.
Everyone knew it.
Nobody argued.
Noah started third grade.
For a while, he became known as "the limousine kid" because of the news story.
He hated it.
Then the attention faded.
Children found new things to gossip about.
Life became ordinary.
For Noah, ordinary felt miraculous.
But one question remained between Rachel and Ethan.
Could they rebuild what had been broken?
Ethan wanted to.
Rachel wasn't sure.
One evening, Ethan found her packing a suitcase.
His face fell.
"You're leaving?"
Rachel looked at him.
"Yes."
He nodded slowly.
"I understand."
She zipped the suitcase.
Then smiled.
"Good."
May you like
Ethan looked confused.
"Because you're coming with us."
