What Richard Tried to Repair

Chapter 08 - What Richard Tried to Repair
Evelyn stayed at Rose’s cottage until sunset.
They did not hug.
Not yet.
Some wounds were too old for quick forgiveness.
But they talked.
Richard had found Beatrice’s confession after her death while reviewing family papers.
At first, he had kept quiet.
Then cancer forced him to reconsider the kind of truth he wanted to leave behind.
He contacted Rose.
He apologized for helping preserve a lie.
He began sending her money equal to the inheritance she should have received from Beatrice.
And he promised to return the emerald necklace.
“Did he?” Evelyn asked.
Rose shook her head.
“He brought it to me once.”
Evelyn leaned forward.
“When?”
“About two years before he died.”
“What happened?”
“I refused it.”
“Why?”
Rose looked toward the window.
“Because I didn’t want a necklace instead of my sister.”
Evelyn could not speak.
Rose continued.
“I told him the necklace had become an excuse. Everyone thought if they could decide who owned it, they could decide who was right. I wanted the truth told while I was still alive.”
“Why didn’t Richard tell me?”
“He said he was afraid you would think he had betrayed your mother.”
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“So he protected me from the truth by betraying me instead.”
Rose nodded sadly.
“Richard was a good man. Good men can still be cowards.”
Before Evelyn left, Rose gave her one more piece of information.
Richard had placed the original necklace with Victor Shaw temporarily.
Victor was supposed to hold it until Richard could convince Evelyn to meet Rose.
That conversation never happened.
Richard died first.
Evelyn stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor.
“Victor had the necklace.”
Rose nodded.
“And after Richard died, Victor came here.”
“What did he want?”
“He offered me money to sign a statement giving up any claim to the Hart estate.”
“Did you sign it?”
Rose smiled without warmth.
“No.”
“What did he say?”
“That families like ours survive because inconvenient people eventually learn to disappear.”
Evelyn thought of Michael’s debt.
The warehouse property.
The forged signature.
The replica necklace.
This was no longer a mystery.
Victor had spent years standing inside the Hart family’s silence, learning where every weak wall was.
And now he was using those weaknesses one by one.
Evelyn picked up her bag.
Rose walked her to the blue door.
“Evelyn.”
She turned.
Rose’s voice softened.
“Don’t fight for the necklace because it belonged to Mother.”
“Then why should I fight?”
“Because Victor thinks our family can still be controlled by the things we refuse to say out loud.”

For the first time in thirty-one years, Evelyn reached for her sister’s hand.
Rose let her take it.
