Michael Loses One Restaurant

Chapter 15 - Michael Loses One Restaurant
The legal pressure did not magically save Michael’s business.
Real life was less convenient than that.
Even after the loan dispute paused, Michael still owed vendors, contractors, and employees.
One restaurant had to close.
The downtown location.
The one he had bragged about most.
He stood outside on the final night after the staff left.
Evelyn found him staring through the dark windows.
“I failed.”
She stood beside him.
“Yes.”
He looked at her, almost offended.
She smiled gently.
“You wanted me to lie?”
“No.”
“Then you failed.”
Michael looked away.
Evelyn continued.
“And you told the truth. You sold what you could. You protected payroll. You found jobs for fourteen employees at your other locations.”
“It doesn’t feel like enough.”
“It never does when pride is measuring.”
He laughed softly.
After a while, he said, “Dad would have fixed this.”
Evelyn thought of Richard’s letters.
“Your father fixed many things.”
She paused.
“He also hid many things because he believed fixing the problem mattered more than telling the truth.”
Michael nodded.
“I don’t want to become that.”
“Then don’t.”
Natalie arrived carrying two paper cups of coffee.
She handed one to Michael.
He looked at her bare left hand.
“I miss the ring.”
“I know.”
“Do you still love me?”
“Yes.”
“Are you still angry?”
“Yes.”
He smiled sadly.
“That seems fair.”
Natalie reached for his hand.
“I’m waiting to see whether the man I love is the man you become when no one is rescuing you.”
Michael swallowed.
Then he nodded.
Evelyn turned away, giving them privacy.
She walked toward her car feeling something she had not felt in months.
Hope.
Not the fragile kind based on everything turning out perfectly.
The stronger kind.
The kind that appears when people stop demanding that the past become different and start deciding what they will do next.
Behind her, Michael locked the restaurant door for the final time.
May you like
He had lost something.
But for once, he had not hidden it.
