The File Richard Left Behind

Chapter 12 - The File Richard Left Behind

The breakthrough came from Richard.

Not from the man himself, of course.

From a file he had left behind.

After the meeting with Victor, Evelyn returned home and searched Richard’s office again.

This time, Michael helped.

For six hours they opened boxes, reviewed ledgers, and sorted through old correspondence.

Near midnight, Natalie found a small key taped inside the back cover of Richard’s college Bible.

The key opened a locked metal case stored in the attic.

Inside were copies of letters between Richard and Victor.

Most concerned ordinary business.

One did not.

Richard had written it three months before his death.

Victor,

I am ending our arrangement regarding Beatrice’s necklace. It will not be sold, pledged, transferred, or used in any negotiation. I intend to tell Evelyn the full truth about Rose. Please return the necklace to me immediately.

Victor’s handwritten response was attached.

We should discuss this in person. There are implications you may not understand.

Michael read it twice.

“He refused to return it.”

“Or delayed,” Evelyn said.

Natalie kept searching.

At the bottom of the box was a storage receipt.

Private vault.

Account holder: V. Shaw.

Item description: jewelry case.

Evelyn’s hands trembled.

The receipt was four years old.

The storage company still existed.

But there was a problem.

The account belonged to Victor.

They could not access it.

Michael wanted to call the police immediately.

Evelyn stopped him.

“With what?”

“The letters.”

“They prove Richard asked for the necklace. They do not prove what is currently inside that vault.”

Natalie lifted the forged bank authorization.

“And this?”

“We still have to prove Victor created it.”

Michael slammed his fist lightly against the table.

“So we know he did it, but we can’t prove enough.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“That is how people like Victor survive. They live in the space between what everyone knows and what anyone can prove.”

Then Natalie noticed something on the storage receipt.

An emergency contact.

The name was not Victor’s family.

It was an accounting firm.

The same accounting firm that had processed Michael’s Shaw Capital loan.

By morning, Michael had compared the addresses.

Shaw Capital, the warehouse buyer, and the accounting firm all shared the same registered agent.

Victor had not merely recommended Michael’s lender.

He had a financial connection to it.

For the first time, they had something beyond a family accusation.

May you like

They had a pattern.

And patterns, Evelyn knew, made powerful men nervous.
