The Necklace Comes Out of the Dark

Chapter 14 - The Necklace Comes Out of the Dark

Victor made one final mistake.

He tried to move the necklace.

The independent attorney Evelyn hired contacted the storage company and placed them on notice that property inside Victor’s vault might be connected to a disputed estate asset.

Victor learned about it within hours.

That night, security cameras recorded him entering the facility.

The next morning, he attempted to remove a jewelry case.

The storage company refused until their legal department reviewed the notice.

Victor threatened them.

Then he left.

By afternoon, Evelyn’s attorney had enough to request a court order preserving the contents of the vault.

Two days later, the case was opened in the presence of lawyers.

Inside was a black velvet box.

Evelyn recognized it immediately.

Not the newer box from her own safe.

The original.

The edges were worn.

The brass hinge had a small scratch Rose had made as a teenager when she once dropped it on Beatrice’s dressing table.

Evelyn opened the box.

The emerald lay inside.

Deep green.

Heavy.

Surrounded by diamonds.

She turned the clasp.

B.H.

Her knees nearly gave way.

Rose stood beside her.

For a long moment, neither sister touched the necklace.

Then Evelyn lifted it.

“It should have been yours.”

Rose shook her head.

“It should never have cost us each other.”

Victor’s attorneys began negotiating that same afternoon.

The evidence around the necklace, the forged authorization, and his financial connections to Michael’s lender created more exposure than he had expected.

He denied criminal wrongdoing.

He blamed clerical errors.

He claimed Richard had verbally authorized everything.

But the story no longer belonged to him.

Michael’s loan was frozen pending review.

The warehouse sale collapsed.

The forged bank document was turned over to investigators.

Evelyn expected triumph.

Instead, she felt tired.

Thirty-one years had been lost.

Richard was gone.

Beatrice could never answer for what she had done.

Victor might face consequences, but consequences did not restore time.

Outside the attorney’s office, Rose touched Evelyn’s arm.

“What happens to the necklace now?”

Evelyn looked down at the box.

For most of her life, the emerald had represented family.

Then betrayal.

Then proof.

Now it looked like what it had always been.

A stone.

A beautiful one.

May you like

But still only a stone.

“I think,” Evelyn said, “we finally decide together.”
