The Debt He Never Told Me About

Chapter 03 - The Debt He Never Told Me About

The engagement dinner was not canceled.

Evelyn allowed it to continue for one reason only: she did not want Natalie humiliated for a lie she had not created.

So the guests came.

They drank champagne beneath white lights in the garden. They congratulated Michael. They admired Natalie’s ring. They told Evelyn that her late husband, Richard, would have been proud.

Evelyn smiled until her cheeks hurt.

At eleven thirty, after the final car left the circular driveway, she found Michael alone in the library.

“Tell me.”

He did not pretend not to understand.

He poured himself water, then left it untouched.

“My restaurant group is in trouble.”

Evelyn stared at him.

Michael owned three neighborhood restaurants in Charleston. They were busy every weekend.

“How much trouble?”

He sat down.

“Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”

The number made the room feel smaller.

“What happened?”

“A partner pulled out. Then the renovation downtown doubled in cost. I borrowed to keep payroll going.”

“From a bank?”

Michael said nothing.

Evelyn’s heart sank.

“From whom?”

“A private lender.”

“What private lender?”

“Shaw Capital.”

The name meant something.

It took Evelyn a moment to place it.

Victor Shaw had handled portions of Richard’s estate after his death.

He had also been one of Richard’s closest business advisers.

Evelyn sat opposite her son.

“Why didn’t you come to me?”

“Because I’m thirty-six years old.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Because everyone already thinks everything I have came from you and Dad.”

His bitterness surprised her.

Michael leaned forward.

“I wanted one thing that was mine. One business. One success I didn’t inherit.”

“And now?”

“Now I’m trying not to lose three hundred employees’ jobs.”

Evelyn’s anger softened, but not enough.

“Did you plan to sell the necklace?”

“No.”

“Use it as collateral?”

Michael’s silence returned.

Evelyn stood.

He immediately said, “I only asked what it was worth.”

“Who did you ask?”

“Victor.”

There it was again.

Victor Shaw.

Michael continued quickly. “I never gave him the necklace. I sent him a photograph. That’s all.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Evelyn felt the timeline lock into place.

Three months ago, Victor had visited the house twice to review old estate documents.

Three months ago, Evelyn had been away for ten days visiting her sister-in-law in Virginia.

Three months ago, the original necklace could have disappeared.

Michael looked at her.

“You think Victor took it?”

“I don’t know what I think.”

But Evelyn did know one thing.

The theft had not begun with Natalie wearing an emerald necklace.

May you like

It had begun months earlier.

And Michael, whether he understood it or not, had opened the door.
