The Wedding Necklace

Chapter 19 - The Wedding Necklace

The wedding took place the following spring in the Hart garden.

Only sixty guests attended.

Rose helped choose the flowers.

Evelyn refused to approve the seating chart.

Michael paid for the wedding himself, even though it meant keeping the celebration smaller.

Natalie said smaller was better.

An hour before the ceremony, Evelyn entered the dressing room.

For one second, the scene felt painfully familiar.

A black velvet jewelry box sat on the vanity.

Natalie was standing before the mirror.

Evelyn stopped.

Then Rose stepped out from behind the door.

“Relax,” she said. “No emeralds.”

She opened the box.

Inside was a simple gold necklace with a small green glass pendant.

Natalie smiled.

“What is it?”

Rose lifted it carefully.

“The first necklace Samuel ever gave me.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

Rose continued.

“It cost twelve dollars in 1973.”

“Eleven,” Evelyn corrected.

Rose stared at her.

“You remember?”

“You showed it to me behind the garage because Mother hated him.”

Rose laughed.

Natalie touched the little green pendant.

“It’s beautiful.”

“It’s not valuable,” Rose said.

Natalie looked at her.

“That’s why it is.”

Rose’s face softened.

She fastened the necklace around Natalie’s neck.

The green glass rested against the white fabric of her dress.

Evelyn looked at the reflection of all three women in the mirror.

A year earlier, an emerald necklace had exposed every fracture in their family.

Now a cheap piece of glass represented something stronger.

A love that had survived being disapproved of.

A sister who had survived being erased.

A young woman who had refused to confuse belonging with obedience.

Natalie reached for Evelyn’s hand.

“Do I have your blessing now?”

Evelyn shook her head.

Natalie looked surprised.

Evelyn smiled.

“You never needed it.”

Then she kissed her forehead.

Outside, the music began.

Michael waited beneath the magnolia tree.

When he saw Natalie walking toward him, he cried before she did.

Rose whispered to Evelyn, “Mother would have hated the necklace.”

Evelyn smiled through tears.

“I know.”

They watched Natalie walk forward wearing eleven dollars’ worth of green glass.

And it looked more beautiful than a million-dollar emerald ever had.
