The Signature Beneath the Pillow

Chapter 07 - The Signature Beneath the Pillow
The independent facility gave Claire a private room and locked her medical records from both sides of the family.
For the first time in months, Evelyn could not enter whenever she pleased.
For the first time in months, Claire did not receive orange juice with breakfast.
By afternoon, the fog inside her head began to lift.
Her legs still felt weak, but they no longer felt absent.
A physical therapist helped her stand between parallel bars. Claire lasted eleven seconds before her knees buckled.
She cried afterward.
Not because she had failed.
Because eleven seconds proved Evelyn had stolen something from her that might still be returned.
Daniel visited that evening.
He stopped near the door rather than assuming he was welcome.
“I should have protected you.”
Claire looked out the window.
“You should have believed me.”
“I know.”
“You kept saying your mother was difficult but harmless.”
“I was wrong.”
“She built your whole life around making you afraid to disappoint her.”
Daniel sat in the chair beside the window.
“I thought keeping peace was the same as keeping a family.”
“It isn’t.”
He placed copies of the proxy forms on the table.
Evelyn planned to use Claire’s voting shares to approve the sale of Harrington-Bennett Living to Northstar Capital.
The sale contract would close dozens of smaller facilities and terminate pension guarantees created by Claire’s father.
“That’s why I opposed it,” Claire said.
“I know.”
“You told me the board had postponed the vote.”
“My mother told me that.”
Claire almost laughed.
Evelyn had placed a lie between every husband-and-wife conversation until their marriage could no longer carry the weight.
Daniel showed her one signature.
“It looks almost perfect.”
Claire studied it.
The curve of the C was correct. The spacing was correct. Even the pressure marks appeared natural.
Then she noticed the date.
“That day I was unconscious.”
Daniel looked at her.
“The day after my fall in the bathroom. I slept for nearly twenty hours.”
Daniel gathered the papers.
“Then someone signed while you were drugged.”
“No.”
Claire touched the page.
“Someone practiced before I was drugged.”
That night, a nurse brought Claire’s belongings from the mansion. Her pearl bracelet, hairbrush, and a white pillow had been packed by one of the staff members.
As Claire adjusted the pillow, she felt something stiff beneath the case.
Inside was a folded note written in her own handwriting.
The message was dated two days before her car accident.
Evelyn knows I found the second contract. If anything happens, check the east stairwell camera. Do not trust Dr. Vale.
Claire stared at the words.
She had written a warning to herself before the crash.

At the bottom was one more sentence.
Daniel signed something he never read.
