My Mother-in-Law Forced Orange Juice Into My Mouth—Then My Husband Walked In

Chapter 01 - My Mother-in-Law Forced Orange Juice Into My Mouth—Then My Husband Walked In
## chapter 01 - The Glass Pitcher at My Lips
The first thing Daniel saw was his mother’s hand wrapped around a glass pitcher.
The second was his wife’s pale face beneath it.
Claire Harrington sat trapped in her black wheelchair in the center of the mansion’s marble hallway. Her long auburn hair had fallen across one shoulder, and the hem of her white dress was tangled around the footrests.
Evelyn Harrington stood over her in a fitted black dress, silver hair swept into a perfect twist, pearls gleaming at her throat. She pressed the lip of the pitcher against Claire’s mouth.
Orange juice trembled inside the glass.
“Drink,” Evelyn said.
Claire turned her head away.
“I said drink.”
Rosa Alvarez, the housekeeper, stood beside the wheelchair in her gray uniform and white apron. Her hands hovered helplessly between the two women.
“Mrs. Harrington, please,” Rosa said. “She told you she doesn’t want it.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“You are paid to clean my house. Not question me.”
Claire’s fingers tightened around the wheelchair armrest. Her hands had begun trembling ten minutes earlier, shortly after Evelyn had brought the morning pitcher from the kitchen herself.
Claire knew that bitter smell.
For six months, she had been told the strange taste came from crushed vitamins. For six months, she had swallowed it because Evelyn insisted the drink was part of Dr. Vale’s recovery plan.
And for six months, Claire had grown weaker.
“Daniel said I should follow the doctor’s instructions,” Evelyn whispered. “You wouldn’t want to disappoint your husband again.”
Claire tried to push the pitcher away, but her right arm refused to cooperate. A familiar heaviness spread from her shoulders toward her fingertips.
Rosa noticed.
Her expression changed from fear to certainty.
“There’s something in that juice.”
Evelyn swung toward her.
“Get out.”
“No.”
The word seemed to shock all three women.
Rosa stepped closer.
“I saw you in the kitchen. You opened a capsule over the pitcher.”
Evelyn’s composed face cracked for half a second.
Then she placed one hand on Claire’s shoulder and tipped the pitcher higher.
Claire twisted away. The wheelchair rolled backward, struck the wall, and stopped.
Her left hand slipped from the armrest.
She reached toward the floor, searching for anything solid, and her fingers closed around the polished toe of Evelyn’s black shoe.
Evelyn looked down at her with disgust.
“Let go of me.”
Claire could barely lift her head.
“Please…”
The double doors at the end of the hallway opened.
Daniel Harrington stepped inside wearing a gray suit, his briefcase still in one hand. Bright morning light poured around him.
He stopped.
His gaze moved from Rosa’s terrified face to the pitcher at Claire’s lips, then down to Claire’s hand clutching his mother’s shoe.
“Claire?”
Evelyn straightened so suddenly that orange juice splashed over the rim.
Daniel dropped his briefcase.
“What are you doing to my wife?”
For the first time since Claire had entered the Harrington mansion, Evelyn had no answer ready.
Then Claire saw her mother-in-law’s eyes shift toward the staircase.
Not toward Daniel.
Toward the security camera mounted above him.

And Claire understood that Evelyn wasn’t frightened because she had been caught.
She was frightened because the camera might have recorded everything.
