The Maid Who Refused to Leave

Chapter 05 - The Maid Who Refused to Leave
Daniel reached the hospital parking garage as Evelyn’s car approached the exit.
He stepped into its path.
The driver slammed on the brakes.
Evelyn sat in the back beside Claire’s wheelchair, one hand resting possessively on its handle.
Daniel opened the door.
“Get out of the car.”
His mother did not move.
“The emergency order gives me authority over her care.”
“It does not give you permission to abduct her.”
“I am taking her home.”
Claire looked exhausted but alert.
“I don’t want to go with her.”
Evelyn’s lips tightened.
“She is confused.”
“I know exactly where I am,” Claire said. “And I know you drugged me.”
The driver stared straight ahead.
Daniel helped Claire from the vehicle. Evelyn followed, her composure fraying.
“You think one dramatic morning changes everything?” she asked. “By noon, the court will hear that Claire has been pretending she cannot walk.”
Claire froze.
Daniel turned slowly.
“How do you know she can walk?”
Evelyn realized her mistake.
She lifted her chin.
“Rosa told me.”
Rosa’s voice came from behind them.
“No, I didn’t.”
She stood near the elevator wearing ordinary clothes instead of her uniform. She held a small phone in one hand and a plastic bag in the other.
Evelyn stared at her.
“I told you to leave my property.”
“I did.”
Rosa handed the plastic bag to Daniel.
Inside were three unopened capsules and a folded paper labeled with another patient’s name.
“These came from the kitchen trash,” Rosa said. “Mrs. Harrington crushed one every morning. Some days she used two.”
Evelyn stepped toward her.
“You stole medication.”
“I saved evidence.”
“You will regret this.”
Rosa’s hands shook, but she raised the phone.
“I already regretted staying quiet.”
On the screen was a short video recorded through a half-open doorway.
Claire stood between two pieces of furniture in the upstairs sitting room. Her knees trembled, but she took one step, then another.
Rosa’s voice could be heard encouraging her.
Then Evelyn entered the frame.
She looked at Claire’s feet.
Instead of celebrating, she rushed forward and forced Claire back into the chair.
“Daniel cannot see this,” Evelyn said on the recording.
“Why?” Rosa’s voice asked.
“Because if he knows she is recovering, he will cancel the sale.”
The video ended.
Daniel looked at his mother.
Evelyn did not deny it.
She turned toward Claire.
“You have no idea what that sale is protecting.”
“Then tell me.”
“I cannot.”
“Cannot—or will not?”
Evelyn’s eyes filled with something that was not guilt.
Fear.
Before she could answer, two police officers entered the garage.
Lydia Shaw walked behind them.
She pointed at Rosa.
“That woman stole controlled medication and confidential company records from the Harrington residence.”
Rosa looked at Daniel.
“I never touched company records.”
One officer took the bag from Daniel. The other asked Rosa to turn around.
As handcuffs closed around her wrists, Rosa spoke quickly.
“Check the east stairwell camera.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
It was only a second, but Claire saw it.

Rosa had not been arrested because of the capsules.
She had been arrested because Evelyn knew what else she had found.
