A House Built on Silence

Chapter 04 - A House Built on Silence
Daniel spent the night in the hospital chair.
He did not sleep.
Claire woke twice and found him staring at the forged document. Each time, he looked older than he had the night before.
At seven in the morning, Lydia Shaw returned.
She brought Dr. Marcus Vale with her.
Dr. Vale had treated the Harrington family for nearly twenty years. He was silver-haired, soft-spoken, and famous for making wealthy people feel protected from ordinary consequences.
He stood at the foot of Claire’s bed.
“The medication in her system was prescribed as needed for severe anxiety.”
“I was never told that,” Claire said.
“You were informed after the accident.”
“I don’t remember meeting you after the accident.”
“That supports my concern.”
Daniel stood.
“Be very careful.”
Dr. Vale adjusted his cuffs.
“I am trying to protect your wife.”
“Then explain why my mother was putting the medication into her juice.”
“I did not instruct Evelyn to administer it secretly.”
Claire watched him avoid Daniel’s eyes.
“Did you give the medication to her?”
“I provided it to the household.”
“For me?”
Dr. Vale paused.
“For use under appropriate circumstances.”
That answer told Claire everything.
Before the hearing, Daniel returned to the mansion to collect clothes and medical records. Evelyn had locked Claire’s bedroom.
He found his mother in the breakfast room, drinking tea beneath a portrait of Daniel’s late grandfather.
“Give me the key,” he said.
“You should be at the courthouse.”
“I’m going.”
“You need to support the petition.”
“No.”
Evelyn set down her cup.
“Then Northstar will use Claire’s instability to block the sale. Hundreds of millions of dollars will disappear because you are too emotional to make a responsible decision.”
“My wife was drugged.”
“Your wife is ill.”
“You made her ill.”
A flicker of anger crossed Evelyn’s face.
“This family existed before Claire. It will exist after her.”
Daniel stared at the woman who had once sat beside his childhood bed during thunderstorms.
“What happened to you?”
Her expression softened.
“I learned what happens when good people hesitate.”
She placed the bedroom key on the table.
Inside Claire’s room, Daniel found medicine bottles, therapy schedules, and handwritten reports describing violent moods Claire had never experienced.
At the bottom of a drawer lay a stack of signed proxy forms transferring Claire’s voting authority to Evelyn.
Daniel photographed every page.
As he closed the drawer, something scraped beneath the door.
A folded piece of paper slid across the carpet.
Daniel opened it.
The handwriting belonged to Rosa.
Your wife stood up three weeks ago. She took four steps without help. Mrs. Harrington saw her. After that, the medicine became stronger.
Daniel read the note twice.
He opened the door, but the hallway was empty.
Then his phone rang.
It was the hospital.

Claire had disappeared from her room.
And the security officer said an older woman in black had taken her through a private exit.
